I Have A Plec (i Think!) And Need Some Advice Please...

Then theres something wrong, what size is the tank, poor thing is probably stunted! angry.gif

He will require at least a 4 foot tank when he grows, if you cannot get one that big, its better to get rid of him now as people don't take on big plecos unless one of the rarer species

It's 55 gal. Should he get a bigger tank? It seems to have plenty of room...

Hannah, I notice you are in East Yorks. I am in South Yorks. I just wondered if you had a local aquatic society with a forum. We have one (SVAS) and the people I have met through it have really helped me with fish and also stocking my tank. This forum is great, but a local one is good too, you can buy fish, swap fish and equipment etc. If you did want to rehome your shark, a local aquatic society may well be a good bet. I got some plecs from a member of our local society, fortunately they are bristlenoses and wont get as big as yours.

Oh and planet catfish is good too:

its not just the water volume that matters. the tank needs to be wide enough for to turn round in, so if the fish is 12 inchs long the tank needs to 12 inches wide and so on. if this is a gibby it will need a tank of between 24 and 36 inches wide (when fully grown) i would say you need a minimum of 50ukg for a common, plus the width. my guess is 55 is fine for now but you will need a much bigger tank very soon!

Good idea for the loal forum, thanks for that! Haven't found one yet but will try inestigate further, at least if Sharky does start to get too big then I can I put messages out to find him a good sized new home. Away with family for a bit so will look more when we return.

Thanks again :)

its all good and well saying your going to get a bigger tank but will you? really i would be looking at getting a 5x2x2 AT LEAST! more like hey do grow fast and do grow huge! they are lovely looking plecs but unless you have the room i would take him back, wait until you get a bigger tank and then buy another one. I doubt it very much that you will find him a new home when he's big as nobody wants them at that size.

Have spoken to an aquatics place in Hull that was recommeded to me. They have said that they rehome plecs of all shapes, ages and sizes and when he outgrows my tank they will definately take him. They don't give any money but they do make sure that they go to homes where the new owners are well aware of their predicted size etc. He also said he would be able to suggest some that would be more suited to my tank.

So for now he stays and we're both happy! Well I think he is, his colours are fantastic, he's eating well and coming out a lot.
