I Have A Plec (i Think!) And Need Some Advice Please...

Now all I need is for someone to tell me this the really lovely species that stays small so I don't have to get rid of him!!

I think he's great and these pics don't do him justice at all, I bet I'll end up getting a new tank!! Sealife centres beware, I'm gonna be the new competition!!

I'm pretty sure they can hit over 24 inches, a post on this site said he had a gibbi thats 25+ inches and cleans his arm to lol

also, within a year or so he will be about 10 inches, best bet would be when he hits 10-15 inches sell him or get a huge tank lol.Any bigger than that and you could have trouble transporting him.

Seems such a shame to be considering selling him when I've only had him a fortnight. And I feel it a little irresponsible of the seller to not tell me what I was letting myself in for. I only went to get a couple of new goldfish, saw the plec and he said it would be fine. In hindsight I should have come home and researched them but as the seller seemed the expert and said he'd be ok I took it for granted that all would be well. At least all the help you guys have given me has prepared me, but I don't really want to take him back only for him to be sold to someone else and the cycle continue.

I've learnt alot from you all already but as I bought him I should be the responsible parent and keep him! And maybe a new tank may arrive for a birthday plus Christmas present, who knows!! Failing that we could get one of those 8ft outdoor swimming pools up in the spare room!! Granny won't mind sharing occasionally, we'll call it the en suite!!

x

PS. Could anyone confirm if he'll like the tetra prima food I feed my goldfish? Thank you

He will take around six months to a year to become to big for your tank!!

So you will have planty of time to make en suite!! lol

But about food he will east Cucumber, Corgette, potato, the middle part of frozen peas is best because you dont need lead to make it sink just pinch the peas till the soft middle comes out and throw the case awway he will love them!!!

Sarah

Thank you for that, frozen peas in there as speak/type!! I'll just have to see how I get on and enjoy him while I have him. But as he reaches 10" I'll start to enquire about a new home, either here in a new tank or elsewhere. With any luck he could be vertically challenged and destined to be a shorty!!

:/

we bought 2 at the same time and one is 11in and the other is only 5.5in so there is hope yet is he likeing the peas??
mine used to float upside down with one in the mouth! i was really funny!!

He's just like the one I have! And while it will grow to be BIG (Like these people said) It will take a while. My friend has had one for 30 years, scince he was a wee lad, and it hasn't grown more than 6 inches in that time. You have plenty of time to get a larger tank.

As for diet, I feed mine algae wafers and tetra flakes, and it eats it up healthily. One time it sucked on the wafer before any other fish could get to it, so I had to put another one in for them!

There's a pet store in the mall, and they have a pleco that's TWO FEET LONG!!!! IT'S HUGE!!!! I was going to buy it, but they want 100$ for it, and it looks like it could break my tank if it got mad.

Thank you so much, I feel so much better for keeping him now! He does like the peas but he mainly cleans the tank - good boy!!

Thanks again for all the advice, you've really put my mind at ease. Now I know what's coming but there's hope it may not be for some time!

:thanks:

Then theres something wrong, what size is the tank, poor thing is probably stunted!

He will require at least a 4 foot tank when he grows, if you cannot get one that big, its better to get rid of him now as people don't take on big plecos unless one of the rarer species

But i have i lfs near me that takes common plecs (@ any size) i surpose that it just depends where you live!!!

Hannah did say that the lfs where she bought her plec told her this fish would be sutable to her 3ft tank!!! and she also said that she would rehome him!!! she has a while b4 he will even become close to outgrowing that tank!!! :good:

Just spoken to hubby and he's said if we need to get a bigger tank then so be it!! :D

I know he's 'just a fish' but I feel it really irresponsible to take him back, he's a dude  !! If I'd ever planned on getting a plec I would have researched them (probably on here!!) and got one or even two of the much smaller ones albeit more money but less trauma but as the seller told me he'd be fine I agreed. I rang the shop/lfs (although not sure what that stands for!!) today to ask if they knew what type of plec he may be and would he grow to be very big. They said he would grow and they had a few types so no way they could even give me a clue as to his breed!! I said what do I do if he outgrows my tank and they said they didn't have any suggestions! I think they've been irresponsible towards customer care but more importantly fish welfare. Rant over, getting a new tank when Sharky needs it so no need to be too cross! Well done hubby!!

Thank you for all your kind support though, must be quite frustrating having people with no clue about certain fish then going out a buying one!! Next time I'll ignore the seller who wants my money, although he was only £4.99 hardly sale of the century!!, and I'll look into things more, lesson learnt!

At least Sharky has a good home now!! :fish:
