I've had goldfish for some time of various varieties but recently saw what I wrongly described as loaches (duh!!) in a local pet shop. The man told me it was a plec (he told me the long name but I didn't catch it) and he said that if my coldwater tank wasn't particularly cold then I'd be able to have one. I was so pleased and bought him there and then, my two year old calls him the baby shark and the name has stuck. He's gorgeous, the most exciting fish I've ever had (embarrassing I'm sure to all you keen tropical enthusiasts with wonderful fish!!) but as he hides away and comes out at night it's a real treat when you do get to see him. I say him but I've no clue what sex he is. I think I may have bagged a bargain too as i've seen people on here talk about them costing quite a bit of money but he was only £4.99 and he's about three inches long with a leopard type print. I've tried to take a photo but he's gone camera shy!! Will try again later.
Could anyone give me some advice on what he might like to eat please? We've had him about a fortnight so far and he seems ok but I know things can change quickly so I'd like to make sure I give him a balanced diet. He's done a wonderful job at clearing algae etc from the stones in the tank and loves hiding amongst the large peice of driftwood I have at the back.
I've always fed my goldfish with tetra prima as the shop said the fish take in no air with sinking fish food which promotes good health, my goldfish have always been pretty healthy and the tank (three foot) has regular water changes and it has a large fluval water pump as well as occasional bubble curtain. Will the plec eat the tetra prima? There's a similar picture on the packaging but the writing says suitable for catfish, is a plec a type of catfish?
Sorry if these seem daft questions but after only having goldfish and being sooo excited about my 'baby shark', I just want to get it right and hope you guys can help.
Thank you!
