I HATE.........

Yes, it certainly does beat a small vase!!

Another question--- I've seen plants sitting on the top of the vase with the roots in the water. I'm told that they do not need to be fed -- they live off the stuff from the plant?! Is that true?!

NO!!!
bettas need protein, so although they may nibble on the roots, they aren't getting the nutrients that they need!

No - that's a big myth used to get people to buy betta vases which are supposedly maintainance-free. Bettas are omnivorous and require plenty of meaty foods or standard fish flake to live. They will nibble on the roots but the nutrion they gain from it is more or less inexistant and eventualy the fish will starve. Bettas need the same care as any other tropical. They are relativly hardy and can survive temperature fluctuations quite well, which is why they are often kept without heaters, but in the wild they are tropical fish and live in temperatures around 79 deg F. Also, it's true that they live in shallow water in the wild but even a puddle holds more water than one of those awful cups. It's also true that bettas could theoreticaly live their whole lives above water provided they remained wet but that is no excuse for keeping them in a vase where they can hardly move. I say 2 gallons minnimum for a single betta. The only exception is with breeders who have to keep many individuals and who I understand using 1/2 gallon jars but even then, only as a temporary home. They are fish... they do like to swim you know.

Guess im the only one here

Well when I was 6 years old a few months before I got into fish-keeping I went to the carnival and they had those games. Were they had them in bowls and u had to throw a ping-pon ball and then u get it. Well thats how I started getting into fish keeping after a few days It lived in a I say 3-4 gallon tupperware. Then I got my first 10 galllon tank it lived there for almost a 2 years. It died of dropsy at the end (didnt know it was dropsy) but thats what got me into fish-keeping. I know its cruel and everything but if it wasnt for them I would probably not even be here today.

Thats my 2 cents. :)

i didnt think gold fish had labryinth lungs..... had to take a second glance at that... almost thought about keeping one for a second.......

Just a thought here I guess but I don't think fish realy care whether you get into the hobby that way or not... The goldfish's view would obviously be that their life is more important than a hobby and the fish that were bred for our tanks probably would have been better off if they had not been bred in the first place as many will end up in terrible places with people who don't care about them at all. I'm sure some will be lucky but for all the lucky ones, I'm sure there's a carnival goldfish that died and was replaced, leading to more deaths until someone decides it's time to ask why.

I'm pretty sure it's still acceptable here in the states, although I would cry if I saw it. But on a positive note that is what got me into fishkeeping as a kiddo, along with many others on this site according to all of the "what got you into fishkeeping?" threads.
yeah thats what got me started into fish keeping..the local country club got rid of abunch of their goldfish in a carnival..im about a 100% every fish they gave away died..mine did and even went out and bought abunch of stuff for them.. but that's what got me started now ive have two tanks and 8 fish total

The reason they are kept in such small environments is because they can breathe atmospheric air. That is why your doctors office has one in a small vase. But personally i think it is cruel. They need swimming space like any fish. My LFS keeps there bettas in bags inside a tank!!! What is that all about?!?!?! They are very prone to their fins getting nipped. I feel sorry for them.
They do a lot better in a 10 gallon filtered planted tank too.
Not true , but I won't highjack ;)

I've been to carnivals that had prizes for $1.00 off at the fish store. I think that's fine. This way, the kid has to find a way to the the lfs so they don't just show up at home with a bag a goldies from the games
