Yeah I got the betta bug again. I can't go more then a few years with out a betta fish.  I have 5 tanks with many different kinds of fish discus, large cichlids, delhezi bichir, and shrimp to name a few. But I always come back to betta fish.

It all started AGAIN when I saw the Big ear betta. I had to have one.  I went to Petco a week ago and I saw 2. They were not cheap. My daughter had her heart set on this one Delta tail betta. SO I got my daughter her first betta. Not the one I wanted.

Anyways it has been a week and our new betta is awesome and doing great in his planted 7Gal tank.  His fins are growing in well and he is looking good.

So I went back to petco. Saw the big ear betta I wanted was still there. At $20 These guys don't move fast.  Since he was still there I broke down and bought him this time.

I am still not sure were to put him.  Right now he is a adjusting tank that pumps water from the main tank into his little tank and the extra water goes back into the big tank.  I put a few floating plants in there for him and he is very happy and active. I am thinking of moving him into a 20 Gal Long that has lots of plants and some white clouds.  Not sure how that would go. But he is safe and recovering now I got time to work things out.

I think he is a big ear betta plakat.  He is a little beat up from living in the cup for over 2 weeks at petco.  I think his fins will heal up nice. Anyways here are photo of my new fish. This is my most expensive betta fish ever. Still not my most expensive fish. But for a betta I never spent this much.

Question Seems like most of the big Ears I see are purple or a shade of it. Anyone know anythings about the big eat Gene?

OK Photo Time.

Ok, not going to lie, I just looked at the pics but he is one stunning betta.

He's absolutely gorgeous!

He is beautiful!!  Needs some TLC time to heal his "ears" though from being in the cup.  He looks to be a delta tail to me but could be a plakat with the long fin gene.  The EE(elephant ear/dumbo/big ear -BE however you want to call them) tends to be bred in the salamander color pattern which is that lilac/purple coloring with the white edges to the fins.  That is the most common color you will find them in but they do come in other colors and patterns just not as widely avaliable.

I don't recommend keeping bettas with WC minnows.  They have such different temperature requirements that it is not a good match.  WC minnows are cold water and bettas are tropical and need temps of at least 78F to be happy(I keep mine at 80F).

I don't think temp would be the problem. I could find a happy in between temp for them I think 75-78f would be good. The white clouds are hardy little buggers. It is just the white clouds are nippy and fast. I don't think they would be good tank mates due to personality conflicts. I am going to move my daughters betta in her room in his own tank. Then this EB will be in the 7gal planted tank alone with a shrimp or 2.

Thanks he was too pretty to be left to rot in a jar at petco. He is already doing way better he is active and feisty and eating well too.
Wildbetta thanks for that little info about big ear genetics. I keep wondering if his tail will grow in more. Only time will tell. What do you think will his tail get longer? I think his jar said "elaphant ear delta plakat" so yeah I think some kind of long fin plakat.

He is lovely and I am so glad he is no longer in a cup, I wish the cup method for these beautiful fish could be banned.  Luckily in the UK they are not sold like this, as sadly people think they can then be kept in small, cramped conditions and as you have already found your boy has come alive with the space.

What is his name?

Can you post a picture of your daughters Betta, and what does she call her's?

Here is my latest BE boy, and you will also see my Salamander BE second from the left in my current signature.

Do you have some IAL's as these will assist with his water and healing of his fins.  I doubt his tail will get much longer, but you never know.

Love his colouring, in the first picture it looks like he may have a slight metallic sheen to him when the light catches him?

PS: if you can get Rasboras Espei's these are lovely shoaling fish and look good with the Bettas.

This is Mr.Purplee The new one flaring.

My daughters she name him Ready But I think she ment it to be Redy like Red I don't know she is 4 years old.
The ends of his tail are growing in I hope he has white tips all around his tail. He is a mellow fish does not Flare up too much.

Gorgeous fish, snowflake! Definitely got betta envy!

Now I'm getting the urge to buy a new betta. I don't even have a tank ready at the moment! Me jelly.

He is a reallly handsome fish! :) He looks very similar to the one I saw at our local petco and that was my introduction to this type of Betta. Nice find!
