I quick note:
Wwestar already stated that she did not buy the bin for the 'cheap way out'. She bought it because it was way bigger than a normal cage, and happened to be sold lots cheaper.
But wwestar, the hamster may VERY well prove you wrong by escaping... I think that you definitly need a top on that thing... but remember to drill holes in the top.
and put mesh over the top of the holes. My hamster Rasberry stood on top of his igloo hole and every night would make a hole subtly bigger, untill one night BAM! he chewed it large enough to sneak through. You have to be careful with that stuff!
