I Feel Like A Genius

Randomitity, Krib and I both live in the US, in Illinois. We actually end up at some of the same fish auctions. You buy eggcrate at the local hardware or home improvement center. It is used to cover the large fluorescent fixtures in office buildings.

That's it! I knew I had seen that egg crate material before, and I could not place it in my mind to the ceiling fixtures...

I am in Tennessee and most places are open light that I have been to... heh well I know where I am going soon

Thanks guys!

I bought that egg crate at Lowe's. It cost me maybe 8 bucks? Not that expensive, and it comes in a huge sheet. I've made a divider with that same piece of egg crate.

i like what you made up... could i chip in maybe something that can help you in the long Run ( adding a flat to the bottom of each pvc pipe ) not only will it help with standing but also allow to have more wait and balance !but good job ! :good:

The only reason it is tilted is because I ran out of PVC pipe. It is capable of holding itself up without bottom flats because the weight is near;y evenly distributed and the PVC is pushed all the way in the gravel. That wasn't a bad suggestion though!

I took the time to actually make something close to what you made (kind of) and when I went to get the egg crates they called them light grates which was established after 10 mins of describing them then ending up pointing at the open florescent lights and saying the things that normally go over them after that everything actually works out nicely some of the fish like laying on it while others just like to swim through the wholes then swim back into their normal spots.

Thank you for providing the information and idea of doing it.

No problem! Part of me wants to patent it and sell it at fish stores, but that will never happen. I'm 17 years old and not looking to major in business, besides; I'm not sure how well it would sell anyways. Please post pictures of your creation!!

You sir just gave me a great idea to spice up my tank! :D
Will post pictures when its done and will credit you.
Thanks in advance!

Seeing as a lot of people would probably use it might become pretty good business if you ask me then again I am mainly using it as a stand now for my non aquatic plants/moss

I did this a while back, see video:

It worked really well for Malawis, allowed a lot of space and hiding.

That is an interesting idea. I am confused though, how is making a cheap powerhead and creating a second floor to a tank the same thing?

Ignore the powerhead, look further into the video and you can see the second floor. The entire rockwork is raised off the base of the tank on egg crate and lengths of PVC pipe. How isn't a second floor the same thing?

I didn't see a second floor. I watched both videos. I saw a little bi of egg crate near the bottom in the first video. My question is, how did you get the egg crate to with hold the weight of the rocks? More support? Different form off egg crate.
