Hi, can anyone help me out on this, I did what I always dreaded doing I have to kill one of my fish last night. It had an open sore around it's gill, the fish had no sense of balence at all, it was pointing downwards and I could pick it out of the tank by hand.

I'm a new starter to fish keeping and didn't have a clue, I made a typical mistake of not have a cycled tank and received high Ammonia levels as a result, you guy's put me right and I thought I was all sorted until this happend. I had lost a few fish previously as a result of the Ammonia but I've never seen anything like this, it was a large open wound, the gills looked all blood shot.

And in addition to this I moved my bogwood to find 2 Aliens living on it, does anyone know what these are, theyr'e about an inch long, silver grey in colour, has 4 -6 legs is very thin, and has 2 antenia on it's tail. I feed my fish on a varied diet of live food, flake and lettuce, could it be a mutated live food such as a nimph or something? Also could the situation become so sort of Aqua Karma, where by they were once food for fish, go full circle and the fish become food themselves.

I'm against the thought of killing any thing, but should I remove them.

Your assistance would be forever appreciated.

Pat

Have you been drinking??? hehehe

I dont know alot about fish yet or "aliens" but id remove them, they prob are not meant to be there, try growing them in a tub or something see what happens, could be fun,.

Sorry not more help (oh and think you did right thing re executing)

I hate to say this, but there's a possibility you could've saved your fish. We don't always lose fish that get sick. We put them in a hospital tank, do our best to figure out what the problem might be and medicate them accordingly. If you ever need help diagnosing, which most of us do, post photos here and we'll do our best to figure out what your fish might need to survive. I'm sorry for your loss.

Posting pictures of your little aliens might be helpful, too.

oops......

sorry for suggesting u did the right thing then (thought the little fellas suffering would be too much)

that'll teach a newbie to start replying to peoples problems

i would have flushed it myself. mollies are worthless and the pain of treating them or buying meds is far greater than simply getting a new one. they breed like rats too.

This is an absolutely heartless post. Your mother must be so proud......

Firstly, the Molly exposed sore was extremely large about 1cm across and there was internal bits hanging out, If I thought I could save it I would but it was suffering so did what I thought best.

As for drinking, I don't and to the chap that added a link to the samaritans, I came on looking for assistance with my fish not ridicule. You know the samaritans do a good job in the UK, it's a shame people use their name as a joke.

Anyhow thanks for all your assistance.

PS I orginally refered to the Aliens because of my concerns knowing that certain lavae have a tendancy to eat fish. My origanal question was genuine.

Regards Pat

ACTUALLY it was in reference to Laurels comment;

I'll edit in a sec...
I was poking fun at a (imho) harsh and unsuitable post...
Not the samaritans.

The creature may be asellus

He added that link for the bonehead that came in with the hurtful comments, not you. Germ's as good as they get here and will give you compassionate help with your fish any time that he can. He's a good germ.

Again, without having seen a picture of your molly, hard to tell what it was. Possibly a bacterial or parasitic event.

Do you have other fish that could've attacked the molly?

I'm not admonishing you for putting your fish down. It happens. And when we're new to the hobby, we really don't know what else to do.

I would be sure to remove the unknown "aliens" at the moment and try to post a picture up. What types of live foods do you feed?

What color is it the "alien"??
Does it have wings? How many wings?

Yes, I think flushing them is a little harsh, we keep fishes to enjoy them, if we can preserve life we should. With my Molly I didn't see any other alternative, it's horrible to do it.

Do you think Asellus is dangerous to my fish or would it be OK left as it is?

Thanks and kind regards

Pat

Germ - I read your comments, sorry if I offended!

Fishkies - the other fish in the tank are a few Molly's, 4 guppies, 6 Cardinals and a zebra danio along with a sucker fish. I've not seen any signs of attacking. I think it could be down to the previous Ammonia levels all my fish that are left would of been weakened by the Ammonia I guess.

I'll try to get pics of the Aliens - they are a silvery grey colour, I don't think they have weeds although I would describe the head to look like that of a Mantis, the body is stick like with two Antenia like tails

Could this of attacked my Molly?

Kind regards

Pat

Depends what pest it is...
There is a link added to my previous post with pics of asellus on for I.D purposes...
