about 11 last night i woke up and my filter was acting funny. this is a very old, old enough to be the OLD model, AquaClear Mini (or 10-20) filter. it's so old, in fact, the sponge is red and gloonky, the old carbon was filled with holes, there is no lid, the little dingle that holds is straight is broken, and the motor is incredibly loud.
the dingle had snapped back completey, making the filter tip back, and therefore sticking the intake tube into a clump of nameless silk plants, which sucked up one of my Twin-Bar baby Platties and two of my smaller Blacks. the outake spewed all over the cover, the motor stopped working properly, and the filter media slowly made it's way up. did i mention the media lock is broken? i've righted it, and i'm making sure it stays straight, and it's still chuluggin' away.
then, while my Ferret played this moring, he made his way to the filter, pulled out the second sponge, and dragged it everywhere. this of course dislodged the entire media holder and made it pop up, sucessfully stopping the filter.
i need a new filter. so i'm getting one this weekend, the same size (maybe a bit larger) than i need for my tank, which is 10g. i've gone over the top to keep it tidy, there's more gravel than it needs (13lbs, as opposed to 10lbs) and the filter is made for 10-20g tanks. i'm not replacing the media! if i can get the same size of filter i'll just move it all, if i can't then the second sponge (which is made for a new-style AquaClear Mini) will simply go into the new filter.
the poor filter has done such a wonderful job, it's worked through every imaginable thing (two Orandas, several Bleeding Hear, Black Widow and Red Phantom Tetras, and now all the populations that were in my 10g) only to be replaced because one stupid little dingly thing broke and the cover vanished mysteriously.
