-40

Answer = -41

I don't think your number trick works.

Works every time if you can count... :good:

You do it then, funnily enough my real calculator gets -81 and so does my head but windows wants -41 as an answer.

The number guessing doesn't work unless you specify the range which we can use which chris has pointed out.

Actually you're wrong, and must be using your calculator wrong.

-40 x 2 = -80
Add 78 = -2
Half = -1
-1(-)-40 = 39 (Minus Take-away a minus is a plus).

no, -1-40 is -41 it's only when multiplying and dividing that it - + - = -

No, it says "Take-Away" so you're minusing -40 from -1, which is -1--40 = 39.
If you believe that it is only multiplying and dividing that it apples you are very mistaken, I've just finished 2 years of an extensive maths course, I know this like the back of my hand.

No problem, honest mistake :wub:

So hmm...
Try it with another number for example -144, -120 or -2312424123123. For me each time I do it I don't come out at 39.

((((-144)*2)+78)/2)-(-144)=(-)249? On my actual calculator

This is interesting, I understand you mean its -(n) and in our case n is a minus number. However each time I do it it doesn't come out at 39... I will ask my friend about this, he's always been fantastic at maths.

Haha if I do it on google using the calculator and this exact equation
((((-144)*2)+78)/2)-(-144) I do get 39 however if I try it on any calculator even my casio scientific one it still comes out without 39. Interesting.

Good spot :good:

With Casio you cannot just type minus minus 1, there is a special button for minus numbers. Which sometimes it doesn't even work, you have to do the equation step by step on calculators some times or make sure you're using the brackets correctly.

I always had problems with that calculator during my physics a levels, I could use my mates flawlessly using the same buttons but mine use to come out with some really random answers. It was pathetic for using standard form and would regularly be out be and nearly ALWAYS x10^3. Interesting calculator even my physics teacher had p problems with it.

I'm use to using brackets though, fitting entire formulae on one go on a calculator use to be quite easy for me. I miss those days... so much I remember and so much I don't use.

That's the problem I had with the x10^3, was really annoying. Especially during my A-level Maths exams, I worked out how to counter it but I forgot.
