How’s the weather?

We're having a wild windstorm, with high surf warnings. Major coastal erosion possible. I just took the dog out and felt like I was getting an icewater needle shower on my face. Good times!
I really don't want to go kite flying with my 70 pound puppy as the kite.
But still no snow on the ground, at this point in January. Around here, that's very strange.
A bunch of freighters and tankers have taken shelter out front in the Bay, and I would hate to be one of the sailors on them tonight.

Welp . Just a real special fun day . NOT ! It got down to -29 degrees below zero last night . Pipes in the crawlspace of the house froze and had to pay a guy $200 bucks to thaw them out . Car has a gas line freeze and my cat is getting perturbed at being cooped up inside . The weatherman says no warmer weather for at least three more days . It’s all a pain but it could be worse . There’s homeless folks sleeping outside on empty stomachs so I won’t complain too much .

We had to put Mrs. Badger's cat down yesterday, so it was kind of a sad day here at Badger Manor. This morning dawned with a refreshing -24F temperature and several inches of fresh snow, an unusual combination. (It very seldom snows when it's that cold) Shoveling off the driveway and the roof was a whole bunch of fun. I should have taken a picture of the icicles in my beard. ❄️❄️❄️

Temp 14, windchill 0. I brought the bunny in (her hutch was insulated from wind but water frozen). Fed the small hives yesterday, with our warm winter they were out of food, Chickens are in the coop and it's plastic covered, but their water had ice on it so I took 2 cups of boiling water out with their breakfast and thawed the water. At least all birds are now in one coop, the one easiest to insulate.

@Alice B You oughta feel 29 below . That’ll put hair on your chickens ! I wonder how low they can hack it . I think most people put a heat lamp or something in their coops . We have a lot of folks with backyard chickens up here but I don’t know any . That was the funniest debates you ever heard at the city council meetings when that was proposed and when they approved it you should have heard the howls and crying . Don’t bother me . I like chickens .

I am on Backyard Chickens .com. I learned about chickens from keepers as far north as at least Minnesota. there are more chicken coop fires than frozen chickens. They tolerate cold but not damp cold. Condensation is an issue if you close a coop too tightly, realize their waste is very damp, and they breathe, and it settles on comb and wattles and causes frostbite, ammonia in the moist air damages lungs. so even though I closed my coop, roof vents are open. they are small and high. (also this is Texas adequate ventilation is a huge deal most of the year)

I was on the bakyardchickens forum for a while, too. It was entertaining. People get a little...weird about their chickens.

Good thing fish keepers aren't like that.

I looked up that Backyard Chickens.com and was amazed ! Who would think there’s that much to know about chickens . @WhistlingBadger - aren’t you glad fish keepers aren’t that goofy over some creature ?

Sitting at a toasty -7F with a " feels like -16" from AccuWeather.
NOT at all looking forward to working this week as the area I work is not connected to any AC or heating. We have two space heaters but I know our refrigerators will be warmer that the Pharmacy until probably 2 or 3 pm. When it's 35-40 the pharmacy is 55/56...so will maybe be 30 tomorrow when we open at 8am. Not to mention actually leaving the house and driving there...brutal!
🥶
@WhistlingBadger. My condolences regarding the loss of your wife's cat and betta.

I know an old badger who swallowed a cat, how about that, he swallowed a cat. He swallowed the cat to catch the fish. What sort of fish, a Betta fish of course. He swallowed the fish to catch a fly, but I don't know why, he swallowed the fly.

sorry but the first thing that came to mind when I saw cat and fish was I know an old woman who swallowed a fly

I don't feel too badly about it--She lived a long life full of excellent hunting exploits and annoying cat behavior; the neighborhood cats were terrified of her, including the neighbor's tom that was three times her size; she had an entertainingly high-and-mighty attitude, a tiny cat cussing out thunderstorms, angry mother birds, and any humans around who didn't happen to be feeding or petting her. When she went, she went fairly quickly, and Mrs. Badger loved on her the whole time she was going. Hard to ask for too much more than that.

It was pretty tough on Mrs. B, though. She got pretty attached. But she's OK too.

I actually kind of grudgingly liked Bug. That's kind of a big deal for me, as I am not a cat person. But now that she's gone? I'll be OK. :)
