hi
well ive just s**t my self just been sat on comp with my dog laid on the sofa asleep
and he started to howl in his sleep like a wolf whats that all about he,s a staff
i think he could of been dreaming not too sure anybody else ever seen this ?

Oh yes I know what you're talking about! Our dog did the same thing, but in the middle of the night while we were all asleep. You can only imagine how my parents must have felt, as they got woken up by the dog howling while he was right next to their bed. My mum was awake for quite a while.

I assume it's just dreaming, both dogs I've (well, family) owned have both done it on several occasions. Always while asleep. Actually, not true, our first dog would wolf howl to certain types of music. It sounds lovely when you're expecting it =) But it sure can jump on you.

thank god for that i thought they was something wrong with him thats why im still up lol
cheers i will sleep abit easyer tonight, is this common with dogs then ive never heard it before and he is 2 now
and yes it sure did make me jump, i thought it was someone howling through my letterbox lmao
cheers :)

Absolutely nothing wrong with him =) It's really quite common. Dogs dream, just like humans. The howling is just a way for dogs (and wild dog like animals like wolfs and coyote) to communicate over long distances. Some sounds, like flutes, can sound a lot like a wolf howl and cause a dog to react to it by howling back at the source of the noise.

As for the dreaming, it's to be compared to a human talking in their sleep or sleepwalking. It's just a dream, and often goes together with the dogs twitching their legs. Nothing to worry about, it will only last a couple of minutes and your dog will sleep soundly through it =) Apparently, like sleepwalkers, it's best not to wake them up. Though I have no clue why.

my dog runs in her sleep and yelps softly, and suckles like she is still feeding off her mum

Ive heard that waking a dog up when they are doing this is not good, something to do with some breeds being prone to heart conditions and the shock or something like that but i could be wrong.
