Yesterday I decided to give Chase his first pea. :good: It was a frozen pea that was then cooked in a pot on the stove (a bunch of mixed veggies). After dinner, I took the skin off of the pea. When I put a piece in the tank, it went right to the bottom. :shout: Of course, Chase won't eat food that isn't floating. Then I decided to just hold the pea at the top of the tank. But it just fell apart and mixed in with the water.

How do you get the pea to float on top of the tank in a solid piece?

I cook a frozen pea in the microwave for about 20 seconds, then take the shell off. The pea isn't too hot so it's not too mushy either, and I take a really small piece and put it in. Sometimes it floats, sometimes it doesn't... but my bettas eat it anyways!

Generally leaving a frozen pea in normal cold water will have it defrosted fairly quickly anyway, i wouldn't say theres any need for heat but could be wrong. My peas always sink so perhaps it would be best to get his attention with a tiny bit of flake first and then try the pea?

I'll have to try just defrosting it without heating it in a pot. :good: I just had it in the pot because it was just a bunch of mixed veggies we had for dinner!

I do hope it will float, though. Chase will not eat any food on the bottom of the tank. If his pellets fall there, he refuses to eat them. Which means a lot of wasted food. He's quite the picky eater. He won't eat flake food at all.

frozen peas come out their skins with no problem and then sink. cooking anything will only reduce the amount of the good stuff you feed your fish.

He'll be a picky eater as long as you allow him to be a picky eater. If he doesn't eat something, remove it from the tank after a few minutes. Then, don't give him anything else until his next scheduled meal. He'll come around darn quick.

He eats pellet food just fine. :good: I don't care if he doesn't eat flake food. The only flake food I have is the stuff I got free with the tank. He eats the pellets as long as they don't sink. I'm not removing any pellets from the bottom every time I feed him because that would involve gravel vaccing and I don't have time to do that everyday.

If the peas always sink, I don't think I'll bother feeding him any.

A turkey baster works great for getting things off the bottom and only takes a second. Either that feed him the pea the day of or day before the water change. My bettas actually like the pea so much I think they know the day they are going to get one.

You can actually scoop up the pellets on the bottom with a teaspoon or your fish net. Leaving them there until you gravel vac will only contribute to the ammonia in the tank.

Although he can survive on pellets alone, he won't thrive. He should have a varied diet. That's why I'm saying if you give him the food of your choice, not his, he will eventually eat it.

Turkey baster is a great idea! :good:

Feeding the pea the day of a water change is also a good idea, but won't help if the pea sinks.

I know varied diets are better. The pellets are my preferred food for him, they're what I bought when I got him. But he definitely is thriving. He's very healthy looking. :good: And I've had him for over a year. Plus his fins are growing back. The Melafix helped.

What other foods would be good that would float on the top of a tank?

Try defrosting just running under hot water. Deshell and break it up a little if it's hard. If you make sure he is watching you he should chase it and, hopefully, grab it before it reaches the substrate. :good:
