I have a 90g with 6 redline sharks (Indian flasher barbs), 6 neon rainbowfish, 3 platties. All fish are juveniles. My flasher barbs are very fast aggressive feeders and then are very good and finding food on the bottom; Im concerned that they seem to out compete my small synodont for food. Any tips on feeding my synodont?

I try to give food directly into my synodonts hiding spot but this seems to have some success but the barbs often devour the food first.

Thanks for any help and ideas.

Cheers

Wrong forum, but someoune will move it.
Try getting your hand wet and place the food by hand into his hiding place.

That is what I have been doing and it works a bit but the barbs find it and devour usually...

One idea Ive had is to have the synodont alone in my 10g tank so I can feed it more "aggressively" and when he is bigger move him to my 90g. My denisons barbs are feeding very aggressively and growing VERY fast and my concern is for my synodonts health and abiltiy to get enough to eat with these agressive barbs...

Thanks for any suggestions...

Cheers!

I take it you mean 'Synodontis'? ;)

Try putting the food in at night, as lots (maybe all, I'm not sure) of Synodontis species are actually nocturnal.

My Synodontis eupterus gets fed algae wafers, prawns and earth/meal/wax worms after the lights go out so only really has to compete with the other catfish in my tank for food.

Do you know what species of syno you have?

Yes I do mean synodontis. It is the species that starts with an "A" not multifactorius (sorry I cant spell). It has some white on all of its fins Ive read that this means it is the species name that starts with an "a"....

I did know they were nocturnal but my rainbowfish in the tank have no trouble feeding at night so this is an issue too...

Synodontis angelicus ? :) There's a few beginning with a, but that's by far the most common.

My rainbow fish, and indeed my barbs, danios, tetras ect have no trouble feeding with the lights out either, however wait an hour or two after they are turned off and they will be sleeping and that's when I feed the catfish :good:.

If it's impractical for you to wait a couple of hour after the light goes of, get a mechanical feeder and time it to feed when the lights are usually always off, like 1am or something :)

Great idea! Im gonna use a auto feed to feed sinking pellets in the middle of the night. Cheers!
