I did a search hoping to find answers, but I didn't. I'm probably not using the right terminology, so feel free to educate me

I have an AquaClear 30 HOB filter that has a U bend. I've been running this filter on my 5.5g betta tank for close to a year now and the U bend is getting quite nasty. While I know some of that gunk is beneficial, it won't be too beneficial if it clogs or interferes with my intake. I've Google'd until my eyes bled trying to find a product that I could use. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. I considered pipe cleaners. What do you use?

Blasting it with a hose or hot water from your kitchen sink will not work...that used to work for me but I guess it depends on how bad it is.

Do you have a pipe brush?

I have various pipe brushes, but none that will bend the way it needs to.

Actually, this used to work in the early days, but the bacteria (I'm assuming it is bacteria) has formed a formidable colony that won't budge. It requires a little "help". I guess I'll try some chenille pipe cleaners.

What about attaching a cloth of some sort to some string and pulling it through? Might need a few goes but should work.

I'll give that a go as well. I would have never thought of that. Thank you!

If you can get the filter off the tank, tie a small nut (as in nut and bolt, not hazel and brazil) to the other end of the string and use gravity to guide this round the bends. Used to do this when I played a trumpet at school!

i tied a piece of chain to a small cloth, then you drop the chain through it and pull the cloth through with the chain....so you need a chain long enough to go all the way through.....i think i used a chain that is normally attached to a plug on a sink
