My platy fry is about 9mm long. Approx how old is she? I want to know this so that I can put the pregnant platy into a breeder tank when she is about to give birth again in a month.

Thx!

Nikki

well it is hard to tell because if the fry is left in the tank it can't compete for food so will only eat leftovers, which slows down the growth. it could be between 2 weeks and 2 months

I agree, its difficult to say because they grow at different rates, If I had to guess a platy 9mm long would be less than a month old, but that is about as accurate as you can be guessing their age based only on size.

bluefire, I don't know if this will help. When I first notice the fry a week ago, it has no color and now it is orange (it is a sunset platy). Will this help to narrow down the age?

you should mark on a calendar when she gives birth and then you will no next time when to put her in the breeding net....I just put my female in the next last night because it was 3 weeks ago that she had fry....and she had 14 fry this afternoon....It helps to keep track of your births :D

Yes, I already marked that on my PDA. What I am not sure is when the fry was born. I only see this one but never the others. I think I will just make an assumption and put the platy into the net breeder sooner.

Nikki.

At wat size of the fry should I put it back to the community tank?
