Hello,

I feel like i keep gettin ripped off at my local fish shop, are these good prices or not?

Clarkii Clown £50 a pair (not sure of they are breeding pair? Only two in this tank)
Pulsing Xenia £29.90 (all corals just have a price no names, you have to find them)
£11.5 a KG for live rock

I have paided for these items already but here are some more i want:

Carpet Anemone £69.95
Ocellaris Clownfish or is it True Percula Clownfish £24 a pair (again not sure if there breeding pair as there are alot in one tank)
Dwarf Lionfish About £40 cant remember price and might not get one till later with a big tank

Maybe others can tell me what you can pay for these things, I live in England, East.

ALSO
why does my skimmer keep over flowing? i cant turn it on so it just stays off...i dont want my fish getting ill or anything.

Many Thanks Eigdoog :good:

the prices seem a little high for the clowns and xenia, but depends on how big they are as well... plus im trying to convert to dollars in my head....

The price per KG of LR seems about right... maybe 7 to 8 dollars per pound if I converted right?

When you say the skimmer is overflowing... do you mean the collection cup keeps filling up?.... please extrapolate on the meaning of overflows...

As mentioned by ox the clownfish prices are too high. Clarkii are pretty cheap and so are ocellaris. Ocellaris are different to percula, perculas coming from the Great Barrier Reef and eastern New Guinea and cost about twice as much as ocellaris.
Clownfish all start out as subordinates and as they mature one will become male. Then the dominant male becomes a female. If you get two fish of different size, (1 big & 1 small) they will become a pair. If a clownfish has been kept on its own for more than a few weeks it is likely to be a female.
If they are two adult fish (about 4inches) and they get along well and don't fight, then they are most likely a pr.

Don't mix different species of clownfish in the same tank. They will fight and the dominant species will kill the others.

Corals are highly variable in price depending on how big they are and where they come from. Big pieces of coral will cost more than smaller pieces.

Carpet anemones will vary in price depending on species, size & colour. Red or blue anemones will be worth more than browns and greens. S. gigantea are usually worth more than S. haddoni.

The dwarf lionfish seems a bit expensive.

Your skimmer might be too low in the water or there might be too much water flowing into it. The fish won't get sick or die because the skimmer isn't on. Skimmers help keep the water cleaner for longer but many people don't use them at all and they don't have problems with their fish.

You can't compare prices by doing a currency conversion.

I'd say the price is GOOD for a confirmed pair of clowns, a bit high for the xenia and about average for the rest.

how do you figure? 1 kg = 2.2 lbs...... 1 British Pound = $1.97...... so 11.5BP/kg =$22.65/kg= $10.29/lbs

So now that I actually did the conversions, it's actually a little expensive when comparing to US prices... which are usually $6.99/lb (7.8BP/kg) unless your looking into a speciality rock. But there are different tariff laws and taxes so maybe this price is good for the UK

Hello, Im back from work :hyper:

One of the clowns is bigger than the other, one about 2 inch and the other maybe 3 inch?

The pulsing xenia is kinda big i thought, about 7 inch span and the rock its self was about 5 inch. I dontm know if thats big or not but i thought it kinda was.

As for the skimmer, my water is high up (almost in the bit where the water comes out) but when the water goes down it still dont work right in my eyes. The bit that over flows is the collection cup, it only takes 5-7 secs to do so and then i have to turn it off and bubbles go everywhere. if you would like ill make a video and put it somewhere to watch.

A xenia that opens up to about 7 inches is pretty big. Most pieces of xenia coral that are sold are only a couple of inches.

If the bubbles are flowing into the collection cup after only a few seconds then the water level is way too high. The bubbles should create a white foam that slowly climbs up the tube that leads to the collection cup. When there is lots of protein waste in the water (just after feeding) the foam will go darker and will start to flow over the lip into the cup. Then you should get a black or dark brown liquid in the collection cup. You don't normally get any dark foam if the tank hasn't been fed for a few hours.

I think what @ombomb was referring to is the difference in cost of living from the US and the UK... If you do the currency math you'll always find that the cost is significantly higher in the UK than over here. However, so is the mean icome...

Hey, what LFS is it you are using? i am also from cambridgeshire but am unable to start my nano untill august time :(

Not sure about the Clarkii clowns but the LR, Xenia and percular clowns are all priced right (i live down on the south coast) as for the caret nem cant say ive ever looked but a BTA is around £30-£40 down here depending on size the lion fish is around the same price as well maybe a few extra £ up there but there are around 4 LFS in this area 2 very good 2 typical chain stores so not so good, so guess they cant afford to over do the pricing, in general i would imagin its all priced about right.
