How Many Neon Tetras?

That's meant to be a rough guideline.
Many other factors come in to play, like if the tank's planted, the maintenance schedule, and the filtration.

A rough guideline which seeing it's designed for small bodied fish like neons would appear to work perfectly for this scenario.

try some glo-lights, harliquin rasboras, or some black neons. these are all the same size and would add a bit of variety.

200 neons all at once? wouldn't that upset the balance and promote annoying algae growth? btw, cardinals are better schoolers than neons, neons have looser schools

In my experience Cardinals are hard to find (at least here in the US) and about 2x the cost of regular neons.

In the UK cardinals are just as common, if not more so then neons and similar price :good: well here they are anyway

really i have found them to be double the price too, and recently haven't seen either in any of my LFS which is a shame as i need to up my shoal

and penguins are even better in my opinion

Oddly enough, the last 2 fish stores I was in both had some very beautiful and brightly colored cardinals. Maybe they are seasonal?

Cardinals are in every LFS here in OZ and round the same price.

I think a large shoal of neons would look great in a planted tank :) I personally need a bit more varity but I think your tank will look spectacular with 150-200 Neons :)

Here in Edinburgh:-

Cardinals £1.50 each (approx)
Neons £0.40 each (approx)

hi lilfishie, i dont know where abouts you live in leicestershire but you may want to try Fish In Soggy Homes in Birstall as i know they have cardinal neons in quiet a lot, you may want to give them a ring first just to make sure they have some in as i know they sell out very quickly

they have gone to live with my friend now, she has a nice large shoal so they'll be happy there, but thanks anyway, will keep them in mind when i want a shoal :good:

I find Cardinals quite often in the UK. Unfortunately when I got a shoal of 6 they swiftly caught white spot and died.

They are also a lot more than neons in cost.

I would say 200 could be fairly happy in there, but just add them gradually ntil you think you have enough without overstocking
