How does one afford this hobby??

old thread I know.

this hobby is VERY expensive if you let it be. My advice is to try to avoid looking at any products from ADA, UNS, Dooa, ONF, or Aquario; I can't believe I've been tempted to spend 70 dollars on just one pair of tweezers!!! While most of the time, the before-mentioned brands are superior in quality and aesthetics, but looking elsewhere will keep your wallet full. I think side hustles may be the best way to lessen the cost.

I curse the day I discovered rimless tanks!!!😅

There are tricks.

Gravel and sand come from pool stores.
Rocks come from wherever clean rocks are lying around.
I choose plants that thrive without expensive ferts or CO2.
Driftwood comes from dead hardwood, soaked for a few months.
I don't ever touch salt tanks.
Tanks are often sold second hand.

Fish cost what fish cost, and there, I have generally managed to break even with aquarium related work. That is always a problem.
