LOL!

I say bait uh
and plack it

Anything else sounds just weird to me.
I live in the good old midwest in the USA....

I say "bait-uh" because no one at ANY of the pet stores locally nor anyone else locally understands me if I say it any other way. Besides, it's a habit.

And for plakat, I say it "pluh-kawt." One of the breeder sites I saw some time ago said that was the correct way to say it, and I've been in that habit ever since. I'm not sure if it IS the correct way, but it works and it sounds quite lovely.

I say Bet-uh...and plack-it and I've lived in texas for about 2 years...but I've heard people over here say Bait-uh more often.

I used to say bait-ah, but then I learned that it's supposed to be pronounced bet-tah, so I adjusted my pronounciation.

I think I say plakat phoenetically and I'm not sure if I'm going to care how that is *supposed* to be pronounced as long as people know what I'm talking about. *grin*

yes, it is pronounced "plaw-kgudt".
funny fact but in thailand they write it "plakad" as written that way it sounds more correct. as well, in thailand, "plakad" is used to describe the whole range of bettas, not just specifically short-tail "fighter" fish.

I say bay-tuh, but I believe the generally accepted proper way is bet-uh. HTH
I say it the same way, but i do agree that its bet-uh b/c there is no vowel on the end that has the power to alter the sound of the "e" (no i'm not an english freak :p )

While we're on the subject, do you say "sichlid" or "kichlid" for cichlid?

I've heard it pronounced "Chichlid" too. How do you say it?

I say "sick-lid." I've never heard it pronounced, just read it, and it seemed logical to me, so I went with it.

it's bet-uh because if you have a vowel like this beta it would be pronouced bait-uh. But if you have two constanents between the e and the next vowel, it would be pronounced bet-uh. GRAMMER KING!

that's hilarious!!!

Like most here, I grew up hearing it pronounced bay-tah. But since joining a betta club, they constantly correct us "beh-tah". And I had never actually heard plakat pronounced before, I just read it as plaque-at. So did many of the members of the betta club I belong to, until they went to a show and were corrected. Now they're trying to retrain me, but I still say "bay-tah" and "plaque-at", I with Wuv, I'm American, I'm going to slaughter it, deal with it, you still know what fish I'm referring to. Its kind of like here in Arizona, how people will be talking with the typical "American" accent, then they come to a Spanish word for a location or something and suddenly adopt a Spanish accent for that one word (sometimes they adopt a HEAVY accent for the one word).....
