I say bet-ta (like, I mad a 'bet' on that horse) but all my friends say bay-ta (or bait-ta) and it drives me nuts. And then they think I'm nuts because I say it the correct way...atleast I hope its the correct way

I've always said bay-tuh, pronouncing it the same way as the word beta (alpha, beta, omega etc). I would think Americanized would be bet-tah as in placing a bet, since e has a long A sound in many languages but typically not in English.
