How Do I Breed My Bettas?

...and im sure many have even more, some people having spawns that have 50 fry!
There were 200 in mine :|

Anyway, you also have to think about the cost of individual containers to house the male fry, and how much time it takes to do water changes on those containers at least once every two days. I housed mine in some tupperware containers that were less than $2 each, which is an excellent price and about the cheapest fry containers you can find, but once you realise that I had to buy 40 containers, it doesn't seem so cheap anymore. $80 for that alone. Nevermind the price of dechlorinator, food, and growout tanks for the females. Plus, there's that whole daily waterchange thing.

It isn't easy or cheap, that's all I'm saying.

I know that's right! Dechlorinator and food each month are a killer. Easily 40 bucks at the least. The first month is cheap, after that....

Synirr, what do you do with all those fish? do you sell??

I certainly couldnt raise all those males..

Yeah I was wondering how many fry can come out from 1 spawn but I never got anywhere close to 200! I guess thats a lot for one fish...I was going for 10 frys... :D

heh heh, my red spawn had almost 300 full grown adults come out of it.
Here's one of my current grow outs,I took this pic last night, there are waaay more fish than it looks like. Probably 150'ish...(most were eating at the bottom)

Another grow out tanks has probably 125 betta smaragdina young adults in it. But, I've had spawns turn out as few as one or two fry, or 15'ish. It's just a shot in the dark really.

There are some shops in San Francisco that have better betta stock. I can't recall by name, I've only been to a couple.. one is 6th Ave Aquarium on Clement and 6th in San Fran. Even if you don't buy anything, it's worth it just to check out where they sell the SW fish, it's a crazy/amazing display. Next time I go home (my parents house is in Half Moon Bay, only 20 min. away from the city) I will definatly be making a day of it though. Otherwise, you could always try aquabid and occasionally there are also adoptions on this forum.

Sarah, you're very lucky! I've SCOURED yard sales, craigs list, and through my club, and I really haven't gotten any great deals. Even so, I will be needing several grow-outs assuming that all 350 of my 2 week-old fry make it through the next couple weeks!!! If I pay $40 for each set-up, it'll end up costing $200 at best. That's still a LOT of money for a young, unexperienced teenager... like Arrow, and like myself. Your really putting a spin on spawning like it's easy, or a weekend project. It isn't if you do it right. I have paid $30 for great cultures, because I do not trust infusoria. I do have live plants in the tank which I'm sure provide a negligible amount of Infusoria, but live MW's and BBS can NOT be replaced by dried foods, IMHO. I've heard straight from very, very experienced and successful Betta breeders that dried food just does not provide the same nutrients and growth as live does. Not to mention, I'm sure my fry would completely ignore it if I sprinkled First Bites into their tank ;)

What a pretty picture Wuv! Thats a whole lot of gorgeyous red babies! How big is that tank?

And I get some Wuv babies from both spawns--very desirable offspring coming my way. :D

Synirr, what do you do with all those fish? do you sell??

I certainly couldnt raise all those males..

I don't know what Synirr did with all of them, but I do know she sent some to me :D
I gave the vast majority away to people on the forum and shipped them as far as Canada, but I've still got a few I'm trying to sell... finally got a bid on my first Aquabid auction today! :)

That is the coolest pic Wuv, there are so many!!! I bet it's fun to see them wiggling at you and begging for food every time you enter the room

splashluff -- You could always do what I did and use plastic tubs! It may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but at about $10 for a ~15 gallon tub that ends up being 20+ gallons once it's filled with water and the sides have bowed out a bit, the price can't be beat!

splashluff, you make it sound like i am clueless lol..

$30 for a culture?? are you on crack?? seriously... you have more money than sense thats for sure. Im really surprised that you just didnt have one of your buddies on here send you a culture for postage. you can get em on ebay for a couple bux too.

If infusoria isnt enuff for your fry then its you that is doing something wrong. infusoria needs to be cultured well. if done properly and aged long enuff you can even see the micro organisms swimming around in it. I even get bloodworms in my infusoria thats how rich and nutritious it is. But then again, i have the luxury of being able to culture my infusoria outside in a pondlike setting.

Its ludicris for you to say your fish would ignore first bites.. thats just a punk ass thing to say... you really have no clue....

I agree, live food is best, but BBS?? How natural is feeding salt water crustacean to fresh water fish?? Im pretty sure bbs are not native to the rice paddies of thailand. BBS are also known to wreak havok on swimbladders. Many bettas have died from eating brine shrimp. if you dont get all the cyst's "shells" out of the shrimp you are asking for trouble. is it worth the risk?

I've been a hobby breeder for about 15 years so i must be doing something right, eh?? My daughter is almost 13 and just had her very first spawn 5 weeks ago, and it WAS a weekend project and she bought everything herself. A 10 gal for breeding/growing out. Shes a teenager that get $7/week for allowance and really doesnt need more than a 10gal. You're being very discouraging, making this seem like it takes SOOOOOO much time and SOOOOOO much money when it really doesnt. it really CAN be a weekend project for anyone. She plans to keep the females in the 10gal and jars cost nothing for the males.

Why do you want all 350 of your fry to grow? All the weak, small, inferior specimens?? Then what? off load them to the LFS where they will stay in tiny cups for weeks on end before they are taken home or die?? sad to say its usually its the latter. even if they do get taken home is usually by some dumbass kid who buys a bottle of tropical flakes to feed it with so they succomb to death sooner or later as well.

To insure my fish are the strongest, healthiest and hardiest i rely heavily on natural selection. by coddling your fish you are allowing weak genetics to flourish in the genepool and thats just not good. I have not ONCE had any funky fish with swim bladder disorders, or anything. If i did they would surely be culled and not "put up for adoption".

Arrowhead
please before you buy any more bettas or breed them please go out and spend the money on getting some suitable sized tanks for the ones that you have already got and then please
RESEARCH!!! :fish:

sorry if i sound harsh, i don't mean to

for someone who confesses to knowing so much, you are not so good at showing any manners. a difference in opinion is fine but being rude is below the belt
