 Ok so I know the convicts are rather territortial and I understand if there are a lot of hiding spots they aggression will not be as bad.

Anyways, I am getting them tomorrow from Fosters and Smith........and I want to know planted tanks are fine right? Ive gotten mixed opinions on that.....

I have 2 Stones making a little cave, and a clay pot.

Please help

:) Yes I know they can Barbs need to go in with other semi-aggressive fish as they are semi-aggressive. Have you already got them? And if so do you have any pic's?

I have a Barb Tank (Tigers and green Tiger Barbs) and I am still tossing up which fish to put in with them and I thought I'd ask you about your tank because Convicts was one of my options I am not sure whether to go with Convicts or Trichogaster trichopterus (the more aggressive Gouramis’) .

Are convicts a top middle or bottom dweller?

I know the Barbs will love the planted tank and love the hiding spots.

Sorry to be a little snappy:) Long day at the gym/work.

I havent gotten them yet, they arrive tomorrow. I think the main thing about aggressive fish is introduce them into the tank at the sametime because if not the fish that was went in first would claim the tank. Thats the way I see it is anyway.

Should I add more spots. I have some assorted cichlids and I need to take them back to the store as they arent for my tank (guy at the LFS lied to me) go figure:)

Ill post pics tomorrow when i get them

No worries :) yeah I would have like to put all my fish in at once because I read thats the best way to introduce fish to the more agressive tanks.

but the guy from one of the chain LFS lied to me also  I got my Barbs and he said I could put whatever I wanted in with them so I got them home and added them to my tank and then the next day I went into a little LFS (where I always go now because they know what the are talking about there) and I wanted to get some angels and I told him I had Barbs this guy explained to me that Barbs are semi-agressive and will kill angels and that I have to be care about which tank mates I choose for them etc.

So I have spent alot of time researching Barbs so I can do everthing right the first time and their are no casualties.

I am in the process of cycling a 180L tank and I am turning it into a planted tank man these fish are sending me broke  CO2 special lights fertilisers, plants, new tank, new stand, rocks, wood, new filter, new heater.

I have noticed the barbs love playing and hiding in the plants and in the cave (only have a couple of plants and 1 cave in their current tank) in the tank in the moment so I thought I would get them a bigger tank and make it a really well planned out planted tank for them so it is like a little playground.

look forward to seeing your pics :)

They can be put together.

There was only one reply to your topic and they said they wouldn't?

If the convicts breed the tiger barbs are likely to take a beating.

The convicts are also likely to uproot plants if they are breeding when they dig pits etc. Also they may "nibble" on finer leaved plants.

With 2 convicts and 9 barbs you'll want to break up the tank as much as you can, lots of rocks and wood, plants you could try, but you're more likely to gain success with fake plants.

i have a pair of calico convicts in my four foot tank and i have tried adding a few barbs and they do seem to get on well with my convicts UNTILL they breed which is about every 4 to 6 weeks.
plants and convicts are not really a good idea as they like to dig and will shred your plants.
every time my cons breed they clean an area about 6 times as big as the place where they lay the eggs and the male will not stop cleaning untill he has removed all the java fern and gravel from his chosen spot.
i have huge amounts of java fern in my tank but the tank will not win any prizes as at times due to the convicts hard work it looks a mess but they seem happy

I got my fish! ill post pics later :hyper:

I had a breeding convict/firemouth that were housed with tiger barbs. It was a 55gallon with one female con and one male firemouth. There were 6 green, 6 albino, and 5 normal tiger barbs that were fully grown. I think we also had some bn plecos at the time. There were never any issues. The con always laid her eggs in a hollowed out tree stump ornament. She pretty much claimed a good 30% of the tank to herself. When the barbs or the firemouth or plecos came by she promptly chased them back to their side of the tank. Never hurt or injured them just chased them away. When not breeding they got along splendidly.

 to the one reply only and it said no

just be sure to have you x2 Convicts as the same sex to prevent breeding
