How Can You Make This Hobby Sexier!

After 16 years i'm not surprised that you moved away!! Have you any pictures of your tanks:)

I never mention the fish word to anyone i have only just met and cringe whenever anyone i'm with mentions to strangers that i keep fish, no matter how you dress it up anyone who can rattle off the scientific names of fish like its their native language and gets up at 6am on Sundays to do water changes is a nerd in the eyes of the non fish keeping population.

If they ask you what you do for a living just tell them you are in retail and then swiftly change the subject by saying something like "i dont want to bore you with the details of my job, i'm much more interested in finding out more about you". Dont mention fish at all unless she mentions it first or she notices the tanks on the way up to your bedroom ;)

At which point - you've pretty much cracked it anyway. :hey:

im exactly the same and im glad to hear im not the only one. I find it really annoying when my parents have someone round and ask me to take them up to see the fish :shout: . Basically if anyone comes round then my bedroom door stays closed and i try my best to keep them out of it. There is 1 tank outside my room but having 1 fishtank wont often trigger anyone to say anything about it. Im certainly not the kind of person who will rattle on forever about them to people, unless they are like myself i.e. off this forum . Alot of the time people ask what each fish is, which is pretty awkward, so i try to simplify it as much as possible and just say "catfish" or something.

tbh i am convinced that i wouldn't be taken seriously otherwise

I think the only way other people will think the hobby is cool is if you get cliche fish which everyone thinks are cool like big puffers (dwarf puffers dont count) stingrays, pirahnas etc.

When people walk into my house the first thing they see is my big tanks in my kitchen. Most people comment on my tanks and look at them for a bit and ask me what the fishes names are etc, and i'm happy chatting about my tanks and fish in situations like this.

But i don't really like to talk about fishkeeping that much to my friends mostly because people end up talking about their fishkeeping experiences, which usually goes along the lines of "i had a goldfish in a bowl and i kept it alive for 6months, which i thought was pretty good, what do you think?" or "yeah i have a 10gal at home with 20 goldfish in it" or "i've got a fish like that in my 5gal (pointing to one of my common pleco's)" or something like that- stuff like this really makes me cringe. I really want to say to people that what they are or were doing with their fish is totally wrong, but on the other hand i know if i try and tell them stuff like this i probably won't get the right info through to them, or they'll think i'm being too unesarsarily generous giving my comet and common goldfish a 125gal tank etc.
Its a hard life being a fishkeeper sometimes :| :/ .

Same with a lot of hobbies unfortunately. I used to be into Radio Controlled cars (still am sort of). You would forever be answering the same questions when you were out in the local park/playing field.

"Thats cool, how fast does it go??"

"How much was it?"

"My dad/brother/mate/uncle has one just like that, it cost £10 and is twice as fast"

"Can I have a go?"

Ask the women you meet if they've ever had the pleasure of having their nipples mouthed by an angel fish

Maybe I need more coffee

Make it sexy...

Well a tank big enough for a Jet Ski would probably do the trick !

I can think of a 100 more "sexy" things to insinuate but they're all a little risque' for on here lol.

Needless to say, "Come to mine to help me scrub the algae from my filter" is probably not going to get you a 2nd date...

Well from a womans perspective...I am in the process of getting divorced, been separated for some time now just getting to the final part, YAY!!! There's this guy at work that had peaked my interest but since I wasn't completely single I let it be.
About a month ago he mentioned to me that he had a fish tank, well that was it! I am now dating a fellow fishkeeper

I agree, I don't like talking about fish with others because I know they'll start alking about goldfsh in bowls, or other sad things. I don't like trying to tell them it's wrong because they'll answer back with something like "how would you know?" or "the fish shop told me it's okay so it has to be" or "well, it's not growing and it looks happy, when it gets too big I'll move it"
