hi i have a slight problem i need to put a new carpet down in my living room and i need to move my tank into the hall way until i finish it will only take me a couple of hours max but the problem being is currently i have a 20 uk gallon aquarium which is stocked and obviously full with water............its currently on a table and i cant lift it myself what can i do to move it to my hall way which is only about 6-8 feet away ??? any help is much appriciated cheers :)

I recently put hardwood floors down in the same room of my fish tank. I drained the tank down and left about 3 to 5 inchs of water in the tank. Then moved the tank by picking up the stand. Get a friend to come over and help with the muscle. just thought i would let you know what i did.

empty the tank to a quarter full, then get someone to help carry it to the hallway, make sure you have a stable surface to transfer the tank to, and by no means lift it by urself it will be just too heavy and awkward.
dont forget to add tapsafe or similar to tank when filling it back up.

Yeah, good advise has already been given.
The biggest tank I've had to move so far was a 10G, I moved it into my new room, then back to my old room.
I think in the next few months or maybe a year, I'll need to move my 55G down a staircase, that'll be a whole tank full of fun!

Hi
Had the same problem myself in the last couple of weeks and did more or less what the other members have advised you to do but I put the water from the tank into a clean container and on putting the tank back in situ used that to refill the tank only adding about 10% new water.
Good luck and mind your back! :fish: Fish on the move!

I will soon have to do this with my 75 gallon to put down new flooring under it. From what I have learned by talking to people in the LFS and reading here, moving the stand and tank together is extremely important. If you try to move just the tank with the substrate and some water still in it, any jaring could cause the bottom to crack or break. A 20 gallon UK tank is approx. 25 US gallons and a standard tank size for that is 24Lx12W. So if the substrate is about 1" deep and you leave about 5" of water in it, you will have about 70 lb of weight on the glass. It will be much more stable resting on the stand while being moved that just having a couple hands under it.

We have used Easy riders. Like castors on a length used mainly for washing machines.
to move a the tank before but it tilts slightly. The water was syhoned of we put the old water in and only topped up. We changed the water at a later date to cause less stress.
