How Can I Ask If I Can Take My Friends Cory Catfish Off His Hands.

This is an epic convo. Just tell him straight. Say. Youre fish is gunna die if i dont have him, seems as he is in a bad way il look after it for a while. Then just keep the poxy fish to yourself. Simples. Im sure if you have him for more than a week he wont miss it. Then you can ask him to keep it.

The 'poxy' fish..!?!?!? You never fail to amaze me.

I have a 55 Gallon tank with a herd of 6 cories and I'd love to take her,

Your sig says you have 6 emerald cats - they're not the same as corydoras. So which is it? Do you have 6 corydoras or 6 brochis splendens?

I agree your friend probably won't know the difference, but you will and we will. By all means base it on having a bigger tank and suitable substrate, but don't base it on the lie of it being with members of the same species.

I know its different but I would hate to come home from holiday and see my oscar missing, I would be in shock; (Did it die? Did it jump deck? Did it get ate?)

I am sorry. These are all the same species and they are brochis splendens. I just have a bad habit of calling them cories because they are so similair.

Isn't this supposed to be about doing the right thing for a fish, not what makes you feel good? It too seems to me that this friend is not educated about the needs of the fish! It is also possible he doesn't care.

Since it is a friend, lets go with option one and try to help him learn. Helping him change the substrate, offering alternatives as to what other algae eaters are out there, and what their needs are. This would give the friend choices. Those are things friends do for each other! Who knows, the friend may even offer him the cory to keep!
I have tried to help him with everything. I told him to cycle and offered to help him but he went with what an employee at the fish store said and just let is sit for 4 days. All of his fish died. I didn't say I told you so and let it slide. Then he was talking about a brochis splendens to clean up his tank bottom but he didn't listen again and got it and it look like it does now.

I am thinking about buying him a snail because the only reason he has the cory is to clean his tank. The only drawback is that the snail might eat his marimo moss ball. Would the snail eat it or leave it.
I've had snails with my moss ball, and none of them touched it! It would be a great idea to get a snail for your friend. Or if it is a mature tank otocinclus would also be great!
So a mystery snail would not eat the moss ball.

my apple snails don't touch my moss balls, except to eat stuff on them... they're so funny because they roll them over :D

If your friend isn't prone to listening to advice, then at least steal the fish, tell him it died, that you panicked, tested the water and went to your LFS who said his tank isn't suitable for corys, and to get snails instead - apple snails are easy to keep, don't breed like mad (you can see and remove eggs as they lay them above the water line), and all he'd have to do is throw in a few veggies in (mine love shelled peas) once a week - the fish would love these too. You can get cool colours of apple snails. I have 1 ivory, and 1 purple (its purple and cream striped). I want a pink one too, and ofc you get the gold ones.

At least if you steal it, it will have a decent habitat for starters, it wouldn't be over fed and he's barbs could have a chance at healing. Maybe you could get a few corys? or at least it would have a nice stop over home before it has a better permanent home found.

I have a friend who I don't know how to approach. She bought 2 black moors and 2 orandas for a 28litre tank... there was no way I could tell her she was wrong. Ofc, they all died, and I felt awful. She's now got 2 baby gold fish (comets from how she described them) in there, but they'll be going into the pond in the summer (thank god). So I know how you feel about people being difficult to talk to.

Oh....I'm sorry, that comment was not directed at you, Bristlenose. I apologize if it came across like that....it was meant for the people who commented in a less constructive manner!

And yes, a mystery snail will leave the mossball be! Offer it sometimes a small piece of blanched zucchini or cucumber, algae wafers....and ensure there is enough water hardness for it to grow its shell! Otherwise you can add calcium drops to the tank!

Then that's fine :good: you should get out of that habit though - always be specific ;)
