Hot Water

:dunno: I've always used hot water from my combi boiler (well, not the thing in the loft anyway) - seemingly with no ill effects ?

so, water from the tap in the kitchen comes from a different place than the water from the tap in the bathroom? what the hell am i brushing my teeth with? hehe!

When I was a newbie on another fish forum the advise was very definite - do no use water from the hot tap. I never have because of that. I think hot water from a combi boiler is ok because the water is heated as it goes through. When I was at work I caught someone making the tea with water from the hot tap  "It's quicker" We soon stopped her! :)

Maybe i'm being just stupid but can't you just boil up some coldwater and add that to you bucket of cold water to raise the temp. Can't see how boiling would cause any problems to the water quality. As mentioned earlier, leaving buckets of water around in the house to reach room temperature is not practical for everyone, especially if you have other pets or kids (I have neither luckily :p ) And even if you do its only going to reach around 65F or so in the UK. Too much of a difference from my tank temp, especially as its only a small 45l tank. I can see that with a bigger tank maybe you can get away with adding water that's further away from your tank temp but I certainly can't.

That's my two penneths worth anyway :fun:

Ditto. And I have no tank in the loft at all. It all comes from the mains. I have to say I've had trouble in the past when the water company decide to flush their system with something that then gets into the tanks without us knowing about it at all. It does happen. The hot water comes from the mains, into the boiler in my heating cupboard and then out the tap. The system is as clean as is possible and I often use hot water in my changes at this time of year. The limescale that comes out of a kettle wouldn't do the fish much good I'm sure and how many ppl here honestly clean their kettle to keep it permanently clear of limescale?
In the long run we can only do so much to protect the fish from all the nastiness they will be faced with living in a confined space in our homes. But, just like children I don't necessarily think it is a good idea to overdo the hygene. Not that I'm suggesting anyone leaves them to stew in their own juices or use scummy untreated water or the like! But if they are not exposed to some things how can they possible have any immunity to it? In the wild they are presented with certain alien things in the water, especially nowadays with the amount of pollution let into the water ways. They have to evolve to survive, while not wonderful or even close to perfect, it is, still, a fact of life.
Hugs,
P.
P.S:I'm not entirely sure where I ended up going with that.

not if you have several many gallons to do - it's not practical to stand and boil water (and add limescale  ) for several hours.

Hi guys, just to tell you of my experience, the 1st few times I changed my water I used hot water from the hotwater tap and spent a week or so wondering why I had cloudy water in my tank! Eventually I filled a glass mixing bowl with hot water and saw that it was cloudy.
So then I went on to nearly boiling a couple of pans of water (didn't want to use kettle due to the bad limescale we have ere!) and adding it to the cold water before it was added to the tank.
But now I have an even better way and found a use for all those 6pint milk containers lol. The night before I want to do a water change I fill all the containers that I require and pop them in to the airing cuboard, then by the next day they are all at the perfect temperature for adding to the tanks.
Mind you this has raised a few laughs with people when they expect to find some nice, warm fluffy towels and instead they find old milk containers filled with water lol
