Today I was feeding Aristotle and he apparently thought I hadn't dropped any pellets in the water yet (though I had,) so he jumped at my hand... and lept clear out of the tank!!!
It scared the both of us half to death!! He flopped around on the floor for a couple of seconds, then sat completely still and allowed me to pick him up and put him back in his tank. I'm glad he apparently wasn't scared of me handling him, because if he had flopped in my hands he would have cut me up pretty bad with his fins. He's hiding behind a plant in his tank now, still a little stressed and has won himself some very small tears in his fins, but no worse for wear :)

 How come it's not "sweet jesus?" j/k

That's incredible that he jumped out like that! I've had a fish jump out of the water a bit, but not clear out of the tank!

Ask Inchworm :p

Yeah... my water level is relatively low, so he really only had to clear the water's edge by about 3" to get the majority of his body over the lid, and the rest of him followed.

Your lucky he did flop around your hand or even worst bite you.... I had my fingers bitten by a piranha when I was picking it up....silly me didn't realize that I was handling a 6" red breasted piranha...I work on the LFS and a customer was puying a group of piranhas and out of nowhere one jump off the net and on the floor, on my panic I just grab him with my hands and the ungrateful bugger bit me my fingers and actually draw blood...i was just trying to help him....anyways after I clean up the wound it actually look like a chiwawa bit me....lol....Anyways hope your Oscar would be fine and it probably will cause they are tough as rocks... :D

I'm sure he'll be fine, since he was only out of the water for 20 seconds, tops. He'll probably be sore tomorrow, though
Right after I put him back in the tank he finished up his dinner, so I'm assuming all's well

G_Sharky, he bites me all the time!
It's never aggression, though. He just thinks my thumb is food for some odd reason. I'd hate to be bitten by a piranha!! Those things have some pretty nasty teeth on them!

wow, I'm surprised he jumped out
Not me, Oscars are notorious jumpers, and once they know where that food comes from they are anything but shy.

WOW! I hope my oscars never make it onto the floor! I have two oscars and they always jump out of the water to grab food but so far they haven't landed outside of the tank! I already have to weigh down the top of the tank because they keep jumping and smacking themselves against it. Its like a game to them! They grab their plant and drag it around and then try to jump out of the tank with the plant in their mouth!

I would hate to try to pick up my oscars, I would be worried about hurting them if they thrashed around too much!

He was nearly on the floor again today... I was switching him from his 29 gallon to a new 80 gallon, and I didn't have a net big enough for him, so I had to herd him into a big plastic container to transfer him. He flounced around all over the place and basically gave me a shower by splashing water all over me

they can really flop like a fish outta water... when... you have them... out of water....
