I could see the first pictures...

:dunno:

As for the pictures, they are pretty bad. It souldn't be for long though, eh? It makes me annoyed as those fish need more room than others and it's not exactly a good example.

I am going to Pets at Home today and I will keep my eye out for anything but they have always seemed really good.

i saw your 1st pics ok too.........god thats bad!!! i havent seen anything nearly as bad here in london (yet) thank goodness. no wonder folk new to fish stick big fish in tiny bowls & think they'll be fine & happy when you see that in a so called 'pet department"

yeah well at the super center walmart here in OKC (the one right by penn square, olive you'll know what I am talking about) the complete surface of the water was covered by dead fish. It could be discribed as a concentration camp for fish.
yes, trev, sometimes I feel like I live there :/ (I live very close to there)...............but anyway, I try not to even look at the fish anymore since they don't even care or listen to what I have to say. :grr: Trev, we have probably crossed paths many times and not even known that you were you and I was me.........(that cannot be proper, but you get what I am saying!) Life is funny.........someday if you are at Aquariums you better speak up if you see someone there with short blonde hair buying everything in sight!

do you think that walmart would look at a petition from us regarding this matter?

I wouldn't be suprised if we have walked right passed each other before. Hehe, I wonder if I would call you olive if I see you :p I get the impression that walmart would do jack-squat, if anyone raised a petition. Companies like that really anger me, they suck and they know it, but they don't do anything about it :X

I'd sign a petition. Also -- they didn't mind you taking pics of the tanks?
Those poor fish

Well would you looky there.........Walmart is just acting a little "negligant" again now aren't they Bol???  :p  (You'd had to have read other posts, sorry)

Again, I am outraged............oops, what an activist I am!!!! (sorry, again from another post).  Now if Bol doesn't come in here and hand it back at you right in your lap then I am going to take all his/her Language moderated PERSONALLY!!!!

Hopefully some of you know what I'm referring to, sorry but I've still got a bad taste in my mouth over it!
Hi Silver :)

If you copy and paste links from other posts into the text when you're writing things like this, everyone can read them and understand what you are talking about.

Why not give it a try? :D

Inchworm, it's the WALMART, WALMART thread.

I seem to have gotten Silver a bit upset., but over a slightly different matter.

Yep, those are pretty overcrowded tanks.
I've seen plenty of those, and not just at Wal-Mart.

Did you happen to speak to the manager after you took those pictures?

can i just say that it is not actually bad depending on the filter system they have. they may actually have 300 gallons+ of water in the system, its just that you can't see it. all the tanks are probably run of a centeralised system with large comercial filtration systems which are designed to cope with that amount of fish. they are quite crowded in there but the water may be spot on and it may not actually be as bad as it looks. I'v never been to walmart so couldn't say but I have heard some bad things about them here though.

ste :)

In my experience, most dealers tanks are overcrowded - the rationale being that they do not expect the fish to be there that long. Whilst I can understand that people find it distressing to see overcrowded tanks, it does allow the outlet, of whatever kind to offer a more varied stock.

If a shop followed realistic stocking levels, the variety of species offered and the number of each species available would be very limited. With that follows the fact that the profitability would probably be sub-zero, (the margin on livestock is negligable anyway). The end result would be a few livebearers, a few barbs, a few tetras a cichlid or 2 and no room for anything exotic. The "bread and butter" fish in every shop everywhere.

I'm concerned with the unpleasantness exhibited in the debate here and in the related thread, (amongst others). I will not tolerate personal attacks on members. Disagree by all means, but keep it on topic. I have also noticed various attempts to "get around" the swear filter, if I find another, I will issue a formal warning, and the guilty person(s) risk losing their account(s) - do I make myself clear?

I dont find anything wrong with these tanks. The comet feeder tank is a little overcrowded but they are 10 cent fish that people buy buy the 100's. Most stores including walmart have huge systems behind the walls that you cant see making the inch per gallon rule obsolete. If you want to be mad at something go to the fish farms where they raise the fish you buy and see the conditions there.

Also -- they didn't mind you taking pics of the tanks?

The guy who was in the pet dept. stood next to me and watched me take them. He didn't try to stop me. I didn't get to take a picture of the Oscar tank,it was the same small 8 gallon size and I bet it had about 20 three inch oscars in it...the goldfish tank was the most appalling, next time I'll try to get a wide view of everything.

:dunno: That one tank does look badly overcrowded, the others not so bad..
Trust me, WalMart ain't the only place overcrowding tanks and neglecting fish.
But yeah, in general I don't even know why they are in the fish-selling game.
Compared to all their other sales, the profit they make selling fish must be
an incredibly small percentage (like .0001%).

To risk getting yelled at,lol.

The tanks do not look that bad. Feeders are cheap and people (as stated) buy alot of them at a time. The water looks well filtered and the fish seem to be okay as well. ( from the pictures anyway).

If it is so very bothersome, why not try talking to the manager about putting the feeders in a pond in the garden department? It wouldnt cost much and they could stock more. And make a pretty display. :) * maybe thats just wishful thinking? ;) *
