Hi everyone

I have a 30Litre biorb that has 4 black neon tetras and 1 siamese fighting fish. I am going on holiday for 4 weeks and looking for holiday food blocks that i can use which is suitable for this amount of fish.
If someone could reccomend a two week one that would be good also as i have a friend who can pop the other block in two weeks into my holiday.

Please help, kind of new to the hobbie still so forgive me for asking silly questions.

Not a lover of holiday blocks, waste of time IMHO. Best to get your friend feed your fish persay... Even if its only once every three days.
Regards
BigC

Just returned from a 3 week spell and the ordinary Holiday block sufficed...... Dunno what it would do in 4 weeks, but I guess if your friend can add 2 x weekend blocks after the third week you should be ok...........

No... What I'm saying is that yer neighbor only has to enter your house once during the last week to add 2 weekend blocks, cause the holliday block that you put in just before leaving will last your fish for the first 3 weeks ..... It slowly dissolves and releases a certain amount of food daily equivalent to a days' feeding.

I have 40 tanks, and it lasted me the 3 weeks (1 block per tank) that I was away. But don't do any water changes 1 week before you leave.... Do one immediately when you return. Just don't ask her to feed your fish daily if she's not experienced.... You'll lose a lot that way. Idid'nt lose any, and they looked cheerfull when I returned.

Ok so what kind and make of holidays blocks do i buy?

So on the morning i leave i drop in 2 weekend blocks? then 2 weeks later my beighbour goes in and drops in another two?
i was going to do a water change the morning i leave, and thats the tank for four weeks, at the moment i do a water change every 2 weeks.

How do the blcoks work? do the fish eat off them when they need too? im scared about the food being released as if too much food goes in will the fish not eat it and then there will be too much ammonia in the tank?

No! read carefully....... You put in a holiday block before you leave, and your friend puts in 2 weekend blocks after the 3rd week.... (you got that).... Asking what type, is getting a bit technical.... just ask your local pet store for "holiday" blocks, and for "weekend" blocks. They'll know what you want.

Ok i understand now. so before i leave i put in 1 holiday block, and then after the 3rd week my friend puts in 2 weekend blocks".

So if im leaving the 9th i put the holiday block in that morning. . . then around 1st august i get my neighbour to put in 2 WEEKEND blocks. and that will do till when i come back.

Thanks for your help really appreciate it, sorry to sound so blonde )

Can't your neighbour just feed the fish every few days or even once a week will do. I wouldn't trust having holiday blocks in the tank for weeks despite what they say on the label. I have heard of them polluting tanks before and it could easily go wrong if you're going 4 weeks without water changes and there is a food block sitting in there.

I would ask your neighbour to feed a little once every 4 days or so, that way the tank won't get too polluted.

Honestly Geo...... this is what I did when I was away for 3 weeks and I had crystal clear water and happy fish on return.... It actually made me realise that I might be overfeeding manually.....

is putting 2 weekend blocks in at the same time not bad? as in its like feeding the fish douuble?

Yes Ecro... I think maybe you're right.... I think the friend will have to come in 2ce in the last week at equal spacing and place 1 weekend block and then again som 3 days later 1 weekend block. Shows you're thinking & not so blond. (apart from your spelling..... "douuble"...???)

hello stranger :) i see its all going well, have great holiday, wish i was having the same dilema ( holiday) but we are going camping, so that should be e right laff with this lot

shelagh xxxx

lol ok thanks for the advice anyway!! really appreciate it!

Hi Ecro,

I'm with BigC and Geo7x on this. Holiday blocks are generally a bad idea.

They have a tendancy to just rot in the tank and pollute the water massively. I have heard many stories of people feeding holiday blocks and returning to a tank of dead fish.

Fish will happily go without food for longer than you think. Anything up to 2 weeks should be absolutely fine, and it is certainly less risky than leaving a pollution block in your tank. Even if your neighbour can only come in once, half way through your holiday, that is what i'd recommend.

I am currently looking after my friend's fish whilst he is on holiday for 2 weeks. I didn't visit at all until 1 week into his absence, i then visited, changed 50% of the water and fed the fish lightly. No problems at all.

The best way to do it is to feed slightly more than your usual amount for 1 week before you leave (fatten them up a bit). On the day you go, change at least 50% of the water and check that all equipment is working correctly (most importantly that your filter is not blocked to ensure it won't stop working when you are away), feed the fish and off you go. If you do need to clean the filter, make sure you use old tank water, not water straight from the tap.

Ask your neighbour to come in every week or every 2 weeks and feed the fish lightly. You are always best to leave a set amount of food for your neighbour to use, as people with no experience of fishkeeping always overfeed fish (i don't know why?), and leave strict instructions that no extra food has to be added. Make each feeding whilst you are away around half your usual amount.

When you are away, because the fish aren't eating so much, they aren't producing so much ammonia and some of the filter bacteria will die back. Upon your return, it is important not to commence usual feeding straight away as the filter will not cope and you will suffer an ammonia spike.

Instead, start with feeding 1/4 of the usual amount for the first few days, then increase it to 1/2 for a few days, then 3/4 for a few days and then finally up to your usual amount. This will ensure that your filter bacteria have time to catch up again.

Ludwig, i understand that you have had success with feeding blocks and are giving advice based on your personal experience as we all do, but you have been lucky. Many people have had a very different experience with feeding blocks. They are unreliable and very risky. Not feeding the fish (for anything up to 2 weeks) is a much safer option.

I'm very curious why you advise not to change any water for 1 week before leaving. That doesn't make any sense to me at all?

Ecro, hope this helps you. Good luck! :good:
