Holiday 'fish Monitoring'

6 days, I would not even worry about it.

You can up the feeding a little bit beforehand, but 6 days without food is nothing for fish. The have a very different metabolic rate to humans. They do not regulate their own temperature as one example (like we do) so use energy very sparingly.

Thank you. I'll feed them a bit more over the next 3 days. My regular feeding picture in my last post, is that OK amout for daily feeding?

I would be fairly confident of leaving fish unfed for a month before any issues would arise. I would speculate that a couple of months could be fine for larger fish.

wow, never knew that they can go for a month and larger one's for two. I'm feeling hungry thinking about it

In my experience, in planted set-ups with average community fish, 1 months is usually ok.. with Rift Lake set-ups, up to 2 weeks is ok.. with non-planted community set-ups 1-2 weeks usually (although I don't have much experience with these).

A lot about how long a fish can go without fish depends on its size. I knew someone with platys who left them without food for 2 weeks and they were apparently fine, while a large pleco could certainly go for much longer (some of the large predatory fish can even benefit from going without food for certain periods at a time). But if there are any diseases or parasites floating around in the tank then they may take advantage of the fishes underfed state, so i would personally advise feeding the fish especially if you are going away for a couple/few weeks.

That's a very good point you make there TP. Thanks for the heads up. I dont think i'll ever be comfortable leaving the fish for more than a week without food but it's always good to know the limit.

This is approx how much i feed once a day fish feed

Any help with the amount of food in the above link? is that good enough for once a day?

Also i was expecting a lot more of you replying to this thread describing your various ways of monitoring your fish  a bit surprised actually :)

Well, technically, speaking, an IP camera is going to be the best bet. Simple to set up, and mose come with some form of interface that allows external web access.

You could use any one of the live webcam sharing sites (stickam?) and start a live session before you leave. However, it will need your PC to be on the whole time.
