Would a high salinity dip after cycling my tank effectively put me back to square one, or would the bacteria built up through the cycle be able to survive the dip?

I've had a 5 kilos of live rock cycling my tank for a few weeks and was pleased to see some calcerous macroalgae and some feather dusters appear after a few days which obviously wasn't a concern however I've just added another 10KG this morning and have noticed a lot more 'oddballs' swimming around as well as a few crabs. Once the tank is cycled I'm going to set a day aside to properly aquascape so the plan is to kill 2 birds with one stone and do the dips while I'm aquascaping. Is this bad news for LR bacteria?

any help is much appreciated,
Mark

If your goal is to get rid of crabs, you need to do a magnesium dip or use a trap for them. Hypersalinity gone too high will kill the crabs, but also the bacteria...

Cheers skifletch. The crabs might not actually be a problem, I'll try properly identify them next time I get a good look or take some photos to post up here for ID, then decide what to do. I think I might also have a few Apistia anemones but I'll get a photo up here and hopefully solve that mystery too. Once I know what I'm dealing with I'll be able to decide on the best course of action.

Thanks again!

No prob. When dealing with crabs, here's the general rule of thumb. If their claws have sharp pointy protrusions, they're probably NOT reef safe, but if thier claws have very rounded "teeth" they're likely herbivorous
