hey all,

im new to the salty side, and have been doing research over the past 3 weeks, books, dvd's and of course reading posts on here alot!

i just wanted your advice on a tank i have 2 options and would like to know which one would be better.

juwel rio 180 or

a 48" long tank with 139 litres.

i would be looking at doing a FO or FOWLR tank

:hi: As alot of people here like to say: welcome to the salty side! Since you are going FOWLR, the best you can do is go big! Juwel Rio is a good tank so u can go with that. You wont regret getting a bigger tank simply because later on your going to want a bigger one anyways :X . Make sure you read up on sticky posts to make sure you got everything you need like filters, skimmers, heater, powerhead(if you want) and many important test kits. Always ask here for help because there are many here willing to help!! My best of luck to you on your salty adventures!!

P.S.- TAKE YOUR TIME! AND RESEARCH EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU BUY IT!! FOR QUALITY AND PRICES!

hey thanks for the reply, ive read through all of the stickies and done reasearch on the stuff i need but im still going to keep researching alot !

i'l probably get filters, heaters and test kits from pets at home since i get discount! so it will be stuff like fluval.

for the skimmer i was thinking of getting a v2 skim 400 ive heard there good.

Hi Shibby, Do you by any chance live in the Weston near Stevenage?. Just wondering.

If you are having a FOWLR tank I would suggest having a couple of good powerheads to give water circulation around the live rock, as this is going to be your main filtration in the tank. If you have an external filter on the tank then I would reccomend filling it with Carbon and poly pad (replaced once a week).

Ben

cheers for the advice!

i was wondering if i could use 10kg of ocean rock and 10kg live rock in a 180 litre tank would this be ok? i would probably add more live rock later on when i could afford it. i would be using an external filter, 2 powerheads, but im unsure wether i need to keep the existing juwel internal filter :/

also any ideas on whats the best stuff to use for the substrate?

Ditch the internal, takes up space better filled by LR ;). Plain old aragonite sand for the substrate

cheers ski.

one more quick question, would i need a protein skimmer from the beginning or could i get one after a month or 2 when the tanks cycled??

You can get one down the road. TBH a skimmer only really becomes important when we're talking about growing sensitive corals/inverts. Most fish can tolerate DOC laiden watersjust fine :good:

o thats cool then, that will save me a bit of money to get some more live rock! thanks for the advice! :)
