Very good read.

I take it we have permission to post this here? I only ask because sometimes my articles from magazines/web sites appear in forums. And I'm not thrilled!

Worth mentioning that these fish are usually available in Wholesale Tropicals in London.

Cheers, Neale

Thanks, i was reading different articles on them and chose this one to use, I hope its ok as i have put the authord etails at the top. And the Site i used was not Right Click or Copy Disabled.

I got them for 10quid for the Pair and would have bought all the other pairs at the BLA Show but did not have enough Money.

I am just about to move them to there permanent home, but took these while getting things ready.

The female is very fat and i love the way the male moves around (reminds me of a Cuttlefish Stalking prey)

Ah, if this was me, I'd still be cheesed off. At the least, I'd expect someone to get in contact with me and ask. It's a courtesy to the author.

At least Gill quoted the auther
For my site i always request permission on any articals i post, and I too have found articles i done years ago in open pubiclations and sites.
The important thing is in my eye is to be named at least as the auther. If no one reproduced it then it would make u a crap auther dont u think?

Gill was you formosa form Gary Randall?
If so then this line also produces gold morph of the family which are nice fish.

You aren't a professional writer. This sort of thing *does* matter. Here's why: when I (or anyone else) writes something, and puts their name to it and marks it as identifiably theirs, they declare copyright. That prevents anyone else from (legally) taking it and using it elsewhere without asking permission.

In other words, if I write something, I expect to be paid or otherwise recompensed for it. When I write something like a "sticky" for this forum, the payment is goodwill. But more broadly, when I write for web sites, I get paid.

Now, if someone copies my stuff to their web site without asking me, that's theft. Moreover, if they don't state that it has been used *with* permission and *with* a copyright notice to the original author, there's nothing to stop someone else stealing that work and using it on their web site. So my work ends up making someone else money.

This is not a trivial issue. Indeed, last week I was involved in a situation where my multiple pieces of my work had been copied to a forum as a posting just like this, without my permission. The publisher, who had paid me for this stuff, was as unimpressed as I was. In the end things got sorted out amicably, and no harm was done.

Since this forum here sells advertising, the situation could be less amicable: people posting quality writing here help to raise the profile of the forum. The more people join, the more advertising gets sold. That's fine, but if it was my stuff that was being taken and copied here, I'd be very cross with the administrators. The owner of the forum would (illegally) be profiting from my labour without me getting any benefit at all.

That's the deal.

I don't mean to be a damp squib. I think it's great that people read and enjoy stuff that other people write on the web. But there are issues here of courtesy and of law, and it's sensible to be very careful. So e-mail the original author. Chances are he'll be happy to donate the stuff. But in doing so you're protecting yourself and this site, as well as doing the right thing.

Nope i'm not, and have only published 5 articles about 10 years ago for club magazins and FBAS and my site.

Still if people like your work and articles you should be happy that as many people can read it as possible, if your worried about copyright stick to the magazines and sites which disable copying.

This is how i see it.

Any way back to formosa sorry for dragging this off toppic.

Keith Hunter, ok dont know the history on them.

You might see it that way, but people who write for a living, and more especially the law of copyright, sees it another way. If you are randomly copying text and photos you like from other sites for your own forum or newsletter or whatever, you're breaking the law. Simple as that. You're reducing the ability of the original author to get paid for his work. That's like going into the supermarket, stealing a loaf of bread, and then selling it yourself.

In any case, Gill, you've done the right thing e-mailing the author. With luck, he'll be happy to share.

Cheers, Neale

I just set up there Pico 1Litre and its so cool.
As the fish Dont need a filter and the shelf my PC sits on is always warm, it will retain ambient heat.
Added a Three Horned Bumblee Bee Snail as a Cleaner and some Daphnia to it.
I have used a USB LED Light as a Luminaire.
I'll Post some pix of it tommorrow once it settles.

Whoops Closed the page,
I'll Add some Dfitwood twigs tommorrow.
Now the only thing left is to convince Facilities to let me have them on my Desk @ Work.

Neale, are you a professional writer? I don't think youve mentioned that before. Seriously, do you make a living out of piscatorial writing or is it a sideline for you?

Gill, the Hets are from Kenny Hunter (not Keith), he is a cracking fishkeeper and you will have got good stocks there. I don't know who he got them from but I have his e-mail address so I can find out if you are bothered.

Yes. Virtually all my income comes from writing for magazines and web sites. Mostly fish but also computers (Macs), and bits and pieces of other topics too. That's why I take this issue seriously!

And do you write many articles on livebearers?

OMG, they almost Died.

Woke up about an hour ago to a very wet pillow. Brian C's Cube has a leak and the water has been slowly leaking on to my bed all night.
There was only 1cm of water left in it.

Ran downstarirs with them and put them in a Pico Bowl (Same Size) and they seem to be ok. Femles a little stressed and the male is staying close by her.

i'll have to re-seal the cube before i can use it.
