You aren't a professional writer. This sort of thing *does* matter. Here's why: when I (or anyone else) writes something, and puts their name to it and marks it as identifiably theirs, they declare copyright. That prevents anyone else from (legally) taking it and using it elsewhere without asking permission.
In other words, if I write something, I expect to be paid or otherwise recompensed for it. When I write something like a "sticky" for this forum, the payment is goodwill. But more broadly, when I write for web sites, I get paid.
Now, if someone copies my stuff to their web site without asking me, that's theft. Moreover, if they don't state that it has been used *with* permission and *with* a copyright notice to the original author, there's nothing to stop someone else stealing that work and using it on their web site. So my work ends up making someone else money.
This is not a trivial issue. Indeed, last week I was involved in a situation where my multiple pieces of my work had been copied to a forum as a posting just like this, without my permission. The publisher, who had paid me for this stuff, was as unimpressed as I was. In the end things got sorted out amicably, and no harm was done.
Since this forum here sells advertising, the situation could be less amicable: people posting quality writing here help to raise the profile of the forum. The more people join, the more advertising gets sold. That's fine, but if it was my stuff that was being taken and copied here, I'd be very cross with the administrators. The owner of the forum would (illegally) be profiting from my labour without me getting any benefit at all.
That's the deal.
I don't mean to be a damp squib. I think it's great that people read and enjoy stuff that other people write on the web. But there are issues here of courtesy and of law, and it's sensible to be very careful. So e-mail the original author. Chances are he'll be happy to donate the stuff. But in doing so you're protecting yourself and this site, as well as doing the right thing.
Cheers, Neale
