Is it safe to mix different species of hermits, provided they are both peaceful species and there are ample shells, food, etc.? I have an unidentified Clibanarius (very nonaggressive, might be Clibanarius ransoni) and was wondering if it would be compatable with zebra hermits, Calcinus laevimanus?

I was considering another Clibanarius, but I'm concerned I might not be able to get another of the same species. It was a grab bag tank of similar hermit types that mine came out of, many of which would be hard to tell apart, wheras I can identify Calcinus laevimanus easily and know it would be ok for my tank...I just want to make sure it would be ok with my Clibanarius.

They should be fine, the hermits I buy for my cleanup crew are assorted, so it must be okay to buy different species.

Cool, thanks! I forgot that hermits get included in those combo pack things. I'll check out what species are in those.

You can mix or match hermits. However, some DO tend to be more aggressive than others. Scarlets are reported to be the least aggressive whereas blue-legs have stolen homes. SH

I saw some blue-legs before and steared clear. The store had scarlets as well, but those particular crabs has caused problems picking at small snails, so they were a tank with no snails. Is there more than one species that goes under the name "scarlet"?
