I haven't had betta's long enough to see one die of old age. If it is not something in his water, and happened this quick, I can't think of any other explanation.

I am going spastic now. All I seem to be doing is making things worse. I'm going to go to my LFS and pick up a few things I need desperately, and see if I have enough money for some stress coat.

No your not (a bad fish keeper)! Its okay. If it is his coat coming off, then you should get some slime coat enhancer from the LFS asap. I know you cant get there for a few mins but as soon as you can go and get some. Actually I think stress coat may be a slime enhancer...

IMO all of those water changes aren't too good for him. He's stressed from the disease and all the moving might stress him even more. Hold off on water changes until tomorrow.

Slime coat enhancer may help, and maybe some salt, but I'm not sure about salt. Maybe wait for someone else's opinion...

You are the one who posted about the "Ugly" Females, right?
I'm still willing to take them if they are still there. Let me know, and good Luck with Orchid. Don't go too crazy, that won't do him any good. Calm down. Try to look up his symptoms first. THat way you will know what to buy. Until you know what is wrong, I think the best you can do is to make sure he has fresh, warm water, and maybe some salt. I would pick up the stress coat for sure. It's always good to have handy.

Yes, I posted about the "ugly" females. I haven't been to that particular LFS in a long time, so I really don't know if they are still there. I would go today, but it is a small LFS, and the owners are on vacation. I think their son is just going in and feeding every day, and it will re open in a week.

You are doing the best you can. You are not a bad fish keeper. I understand your helplessness. You are doing all the right things to help make him comfortable. Stress Coat may help, I wouldn't know as I don't use it. Is there any way you could take a picture?

Stredding and peeling of the coat can be columnaris how bad is it.

Wait, doesn't stress coat have aloe vera in it? Thats not great for fish is it?

@widler: I thought columnaris appeared as a fungus, right?

Sadly, I have no camera. My sister has one, maybe when she comes home tonight I will ask her where it is, if Orchid makes it to tonight... :( The peeling is HORRIBLy bad. It looks like he is incased in a slimy white sheet. His gills are covered. If it IS columnaris, i need to sterilize everything, right?

Is the bowl really slimey to the touch.

Okay, that does sound like columnaris. Yes you need to boil everything before putting another fish in there, or after he gets better, or starts to come around if it is columnaris.

your fish sits at the bottom of the tank, clamps it's fins, gets alot of slime coat, stops eating...the list goes on...chances are bacteria have attacked. The most frequent cause of this is water quality, although sometimes other causes are the culprit. Sometimes the "good" bacteria overgrows for unknown reasons, and cause the problem (good reason for water changes!). Or a scratch gives bacteria that is normally "good" a place to invade the betta. Just because it's good bacteria doesn't mean it won't use an opportunity for infection.
Treatment: Maracyn AND Maracyn II, Kanacyn, Maroxy, Tetracycline, Furan-2.

I would get going with a med mentioned quickly and some salt, and daily water changes.
