ive heard that guppies have a fry of 30 to 40, but my guppy seems to have had only 1, can anyone tell me if this is normal

the most I have had in a guppy litter, 13. My Black-chinned Livebearers one female just had 3.

I think it depence on the health of the fish. Or type of fish, as I had a molly had 40 fry.

I think the younger the fish, the fewer fry they'll have.

Also, is it possible that some of them could have been eaten? I've only got one planted tank so I let them give birth freely in there. I know that they probably have 20 - 30 at a time, but I usually only get between 1 - 3 survive being eaten :/

My guppy had 2 then after about 7 day i found there was 5 in there. Not sure if they were just hiding and I couldnt see them or what. They are 2-3 weeks old now and can be seen most of the time just waiting for them to get some color (not sure how long that takes?

:S hi there,
still only got the one baby guppy its in the tank and doing well, however we had a pregnant female, we have a breeding net which she is in. but im feeling very sorry for her, she seems to be missing her friends, will the mum guppy eat her young?
when she has the fry do we put her straight back in with the others?

Yes the mum will eat the fry, do you have a plastic breeder where the young can swim to safety from the mother, once she has had the babies return the mother back to the tank.

If you have lots of hiding places and not too many fish in your main tank, I would let the female out. Many of the fry should survive so, unless you want ALL of them, there is no reason to keep the female in there (which is stressful and frustrating).

Most guppies will give birth to about 5-10 fry at their first pregnancy. From then on, healthy fish can produce 50 or more and it increases with size, age and feeding/health. Usualy most will be eaten which may explain why so many people say their fish only give birth to small numbers of fry. Very old guppies will have fewer fry.

thank you all who has advised me on this matter, im just going to let her out, i feel really sad for her in there by herself. :)
