My boyfriend and I have tropical fish and have done so for over a year. We had to get a new tank as our old one was leaking we swapped all the fish over and also got some new ones. since we have had this tank we have had nothing but problems, we cleaned this tank out properly and have to what we know done everything right. yesterday we got some new fish and all where dead within 7hours! the shop was happy to swap the fish over today and already 3 have died within a couple of hours with one more that seems to be on its way out! I dont understand what we are doing wrong or if there is a problem with the tank? can anyone help us?? thanks!

Did you use the old media from your old tank if not then your tank isnt cycled if its new media etc. also what did you use to clean tank with? Also you could jus have had a real bad batch of fish. what are your water stats?.

yes we used the old media but got a new ornament which we made sure was clean before putting in the tank. i was told to clean my tank with just hot water as any cleaning products would be harmful to our fish so i did so, we have not check the water yet, im going to get a water test kit tomorrow on my lunch as my local shop had none in stock.

Seems like you may have had a bad batch of fish but get test kit to check water.

ok thank you very much for your help, i hope thats the only problem! will check the water tomorrow and go from there then, again thank you

Size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Also need water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

Immediate water change and increase aeration.

Any signs of gasping, laboured breathing, darting, excess mucas, milky substance on fish, flicking and rubbing, barrel rolling.

How long did you climatise the new fish for.

What did you clean the ornament with.
Any chemicals gotten into the tank.

the tank size is 1ft 50cm length, 1ft 6cm depth and 1ft 2cm high.

we have 12 fish but they are all very small fish no big fish at all.

i can do my water test tomorrow and post them up then?

a couple of our fish seem to dive up and grab air?

we just used boiling hot water, thats what we have been told to clean with is this right? no chemicals have gotten in.

Put your tanks measurements in the aquarium calculator at the top of the forum.

Is there plenty of aeration in the tank.

I would preform a water change and increase aeration.

Until we know your water stats we would be guessing to what happening with your fish.
Bad water quality is the first thing to rule out when fish are dying.

If the fish are shooting up top for air it could be bad water quality, lack of aeration.

ok the litres are 75.
lmp gallons is 16
us gallons is 20 (wasnt to sure on what one? )

im going as soon as i get the chance tomorrow to get a water test so as soon as i get home and do this i can post them up.

should i do the water test before doing a change of water?

It's more accurate if you do a test before you change the water.
Once you have changed the water you have to wait a few hours before you can test the water.

Buy liquid test kits as there more accurate. The test strips cards are a waste of money as they don't give very accurate readings.

Also can you list the name of the fish you have and how many.

ok brilliant! will do that and sort it tomorrow!

we have 1 loach, 1 zebra danio, 2 penguin tetra ( i think they are tetra, my byfriend buys alot of these ) 1 guppy male, 1 algae sucker fish, and 5 or 6 others that are silver same size as the above but im unsure of the names :S

Need to find the name of the loach and algae sucker fish.

Your tanks looks overstocked to me.

Try and find to photo of the silver fish on the net.
Are they a small tetra.

no not from pets at home i refuse to buy anything from this place! the place has dead fish floating in the tanks and the staff are useless, its a proper fish shop we use all the time but just recently the fish have been dying off this is why im not sure if its us or them... hoping the water test shows us tomorrow?!
