hi evryone

i hope you can help me. I have a airpump which is quite strong. The airpump killed my beautiful fish Snape :-( an my new baby fish (not sure what type)now as i have some really small fish and there fancys so really slow i am scared of losing any more and it a big tank so i need it onn for oxygen is there anything to cover the bottom(the sucky part) or some kind of gaurd can any one help?

thank you kind rehards mandy

Sorry, I don't quite get you, how did an airpump kill your fish? By what you said it makes it sound as if the fish got sucked into the airpump?

I doubt it was the airpump which killed your fish. If there somehow got sucked into it or something, the fish would probably already have been weakened by something to get sucked in.

Also, I'm not really sure why there would be a sucky part of an airpump. Are you using it just to power an airstone of for something else?

In the meantime, check your water stats, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate pH.

Also, what size tank, how many of what type fish, is it fully cycled? Any symptoms of disease? how did the fish look before they died?

Do you mean the filter? The part where it sucks the water in? If so get a sponge and put it around the intake part, make sure it is quite thin so it doesn't stop the filtration to much.

thanks all my fish are fine. The airpump has a cone on the bottom witch sucks up water and pushes the water back out 2 agitate the top of the water. I am only using it to oxygenate the water. If i were to add a thin sponge to the pump what type an how would i go about attachin it

What make/model is the airpump? By your discription it sounds more like a powerhead.

boyu submersible sp-1800 it has a website www.boyuaquarium.com thats all the info the box gives what is a power head?

btw with that site go to the top right an clik english then into product search an click arrown find submersible pump sp-1800

Thats a powerhead you have got, its used to create current in the aquarium or to power sponge fitlers. I'm presuing you have another filter, the current produced by that should be enough to oxygenate the water, so this pump may not be totally neccesary, depending on your other filtration.

By the looks of it, it could well be powerful enough to suck in small fish/baby fish. I would consider swapping it for an airpump. Though like someone before said if you put sponge over the intake (the pointy cone) it should help.

Whether your airpump killed your fish or not please not you do not need an airpump. Airpumps actually oxygenate the water very little as all the bubbles burst at the top, just the ripple of your filter will oxygenate the water enough in the average aquarium.

I'm sorry to hear about the death of your fish :rip:

According to your posts on January 23rd you had 21 fish, on Feb 6th you lost 'spot' and 'flame', then feb 9th you lost 'toothbrush' then feb 16th you lost 'snape'. That's 4 deaths in less then 2 weeks which to me says something isn't right in the tank.

What size is the tank?
How long has it been setup and did you cycle it?
What fish do you have and how many of each?
What are your tank readings? (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate)

As already stated it's highly likely that the fish was already ill / struggling to swim before being sucked into the pump, exactly what type of fish was it and how big was it? Also do you still have your albino toad / frog in the same tank or did you return it?

i have the albino toad in a new tank with a friend there fine i think there even trying to spawn lol.

i have 4 2-3 inches comen/coment(not sure witch) i there to very small pink fish no idea what they are 1 3inches blackmoor all of which i got yesterday( because my dad just cant stop buying lol) one red cap oranda 1 different oranda 1 caliyo ryukin and 2 small unowen fish ( idid post a topic 2 find out what they wher but none helped me lol 15-16 minnows an theres stripy fish with lond fins same size as the minnows i no i am heavly overstacked an am tryin 2 find new hames 4 some none on the fish showed any sighns of illness although i am aware that a couple seemed to have swimbladder problems when i got the new fish yesterday i put them in after aclimatizin for 30mins an 1 died withon 5mins no idea why plaes help me oh ye and my tanks 170 liters

thanks mandy

so that's about 40 gallons with:

4 common/comet goldfish
4 fancy goldfish
15 minnows
2 unknown pink fish
2 small unknown fish (if these are the ones Thunder and Storm that you posted about, these are fancy goldfish too, meaning you have 6 fancy goldfish!)
1 stripey unknown fish

that is a hell of a lot of fish! and goldfish are super-messy too.

What are the stats for your water? ammonia<nitrite<nitrate<ph (sorry my comma button wont work)

i imagine the reason a fish died with minutes of adding it to the tank is your water quality is poor>

how often are you doing water changes and how much?

and what are you doing to rehome the fish?

if you are trying to rehome fish, why is your dad buying more? tell him to stop. If he wants more fish he can set up his own tank

i am waiting for my friend 2 set a tank up i do have a small unfilterd tank i could use for something andi clean 30-40% 2 times a weak

What type of filter do you have for your tank?

What fish will your friend be re-homing for you and how long will it be before it's ready?

We really need to know those stats to be able to advise how best to keep the fish alive until you can return them to the shop / re-home them, it will also help us conclude what killed the fish, my guess is ammonia and / or nitrite.

Just to make sure, you are adding de-chlorinator when you change the water aren't you?
