Has he ever been in with any other fish before? My girl thistle has wounds like that from when my other tow girls ganged up on her... after about a week of water with aquarium salt and s little bit of melafix and Pimafix she had started healing, the wounds got smaller and her scales started growing back, even though she always had an indent in her back from where the flesh had been missing. Give him time before thinking about that last alternative... also, you might want to see what temperature the water in that cup/bowl thing is.. if you have a warm room you might not have to worry, but betta's are a tropical fish and should be in water thats 74-80 Degrees farenhiet.

I'm about to go check up on him now... hopefully he's getting better. As far as I know, he has never been left in a tank with another betta.

Wow.. that is an incredibly small container to house your fish in. That's the size of thing I use to transport mine... transport. Not live in.

Bettas really, really need more room than that. I would have to disagree with everyone and say that, one of the best things you could do for him is, very GENTLY, GENTLY, GENTLY scoop him out of that thing with something small, as carefully as you can - NO NETS, I fear that would make it worse, and put him in something MUCH bigger. 1 gallon is the minimum. And never put him back in something so small again unless it's only temporary.

I say this because, it is probably the tiny living quarters which brought about this condition. If you leave him there, I'm not sure he'll get better.

I would be very careful to take the advice of any singular person on this forum. I wouldn't take my own advice, unless some other people agree with me. For now, it looks like people are reccomending to leave him alone, so for now, go with the majority...

It's just that I personally feel it's quite sad for that little guy to live in that tiny space...

Chrissi, I know what you are getting at I agree with you wholeheartedly about his vase. I think perhaps the more experienced amongst us (definitely not me I am still learning) think that the shock could do him more harm than good. Saying that one of my boys with swimbladder has just been moved to a plastic container, it only cost 99p. from one of these cheap shops. He is very happy in it, I bought it as it is longer than the normal critter keepers I get. So he can swim the length of it but doesnt have far to go for air. He didnt mind the move.
Perhaps in a day or so if he is ok the poorly fish could be moved to something a bit larger?

Chrissi, thanks for the advice. I just want to make sure he's getting better before I make a move since I'm just a caretaker of this fish. I did check up on him a few hours ago and he does seem to be getting better? He has become more active and seems to be swimming more normally than he was before. However, the rest of the dorsal fin which was barely hanging on has fallen off, hopefully it'll grow back. Thank you all for your help and support.

So, I took care of the fish for 3 days until my friend's sisters got back home from a wedding. I haven't really checked up on the fish since they got back but from what I hear, he might have developed dropsy. Is it worth trying to medicate a fish with dropsy? Has anyone experienced a case of dropsy going away?

From what I've read, Dropsy is VERY hard to cure, and it's just best to euthanize..

I just heard from my friend that the betta passed away yesterday. Thank you all for trying to help. I guess there were too many factors involved in this sickness and it was too much for the fish to handle. RIP.

Make sure you tell your friend that if they are to keep bettas again, they NEED at least 1 gallon. A wine glass is not a suitable home.
