We’ve gone about a year without a single fish death. About 2 weeks ago this guppy had babies and she had been doing fine. 5 days ago we found a dead male guppy. Last night we looked at the tank and saw the mother fish like this. It was very sudden, now she has a white spot on her back fin. I can’t tell if it’s sickness or from other fish messing with her over night. Any ideas?

It’s a 33 gallon tank, 78-80 degrees, ph 7.4, high ph 7.6, ammonia 0, nitrite 0 nitrate60ppm. We did a 30% water change 8 days ago and usually go 7-10 days with 30%. Thanks so much!

I feel like she has swim bladder disease, but I can’t tell what caused it. Could she have picked “something” up from the dead male? -John

She is rather thin for a female guppy and her tail looks a bit chewed up, it could be fin rot setting in. How many fish are in the tank and what other species do you keep? Are they all eating normally? Any of them eating then spitting the food back out? Notice any white, thin poo from them?

With nitrates at 60 that is very high. You want to keep them under 30 at all times but around 10 is safer yet. Do another water change but this time shoot for 50-75%.

Thanks for the response! There are 12 fish in all. A mixture of neon tetras, glofish and guppies. They’ve been together just under a year. The white poop sounds familiar, but I have not noticed any spitting food out. I will check tonight at feeding and definitely change the water again! Thanks again.

I just thought of another theory to your problem. Live bearers need hard water, the high levels of dissolved minerals are vital for their health. While they can live in soft water they will not live long. Do you have hard or soft water?

Good try but nope. Our water is pretty hard. Leaves water marks on most of our clear glasses.
