Help,problems Turning Brackish Into Marine?

it is an add on to an existing aquarium to provide a safe haven for sessile invertebrates and other delicate species, as well as prevent the over-predation of desirable macroalgaes, tiny beneficial crustaceans, such as copepods and amphipods, or other things you may be cultivating.

ok, thanks.. i still have a few questions:
1) whats a refugium?
2) can i run my external filter(matured) while/during/after putting live rock in the tank?
3) if i buy live rock from my lfs, for 11.99 per kg(good price?) will it get "die-off"?

thanks guys!

Copied straight from Bagu 'it is an add on to an existing aquarium to provide a safe haven for sessile invertebrates and other delicate species, as well as prevent the over-predation of desirable macroalgaes, tiny beneficial crustaceans, such as copepods and amphipods, or other things you may be cultivating. ' although my teacher's nose is twitching, maybe a bit of copying and pasting going on here  it is a perfect answer! It is usually a hang on small tank like box

2) can i run my external filter(matured) while/during/after putting live rock in the tank?

You can run it all the time if you so wish

3) if i buy live rock from my lfs, for 11.99 per kg(good price?) will it get "die-off"?

don't buy from a lfs - get from a reefer breaking down a tank for about £5 a kilo - better hitch hikers, usually better rock and if you transport it in water for a short time, less die off.

My suggestion would be bring up your sg as Neale has suggested, then when close to 1.024 buy your live rock and keep in a holding tank or plastic container with heat and a powerhead. test for a cycle, when this is finsihed add lr to your tank and very slowly with water changes bring up the sg to 1.026 (as you want to keep some corals)

thanks guys!

:fish:

ps your puffer will eat anything with a shell that will fit in his mouth and he can chomp with his beak

ok, thanks very much seffie, i thought what bagu wrote was random, i didnt think it was towards the refugium question

i am getting scared about keeping corals though, there seems too much to do as it is lol.

glad for all of your help, i am one step closer!

You will probably have a huge algae and waste problem with a puffer AND a reef since you will be unable to keep inverts -_-

Bagu's answer was so perfect, I rwally think your Teachers nose was sniffing correctly Seffie.

However, it is the true definition and this I hope will not be marked.

Go with seffies suggestion of finding someone who is breaking down a tank to get your live rock, it will work out tons cheaper. If you need it one of us can pm you the name of another forum we use for the classified section, someone is usually selling some on there.

No need to be scared about corals, I was when I started, look at my tank now, almost out of room, thats why I have to get a 6ft tank. I cannot stop it is so addictive. I keep seeing all these new corals and fish I really like.

good choice if you are really set on the puffer.

If you put about 25 lbs of live rock in the tank with 20x or more flow from your powerheads, you shouldn't need the external filter. Unless it's just to hold carbon/phosban/floss.

thankyou, in a way i hate the addiction, becuase at the end of the day its just human greed, i mean sometimes i think of all the people in the world that have nothing, and then theres me with a cushy life, house, essentials and loads of things i dont even need like fish tanks, i mean i already have 3, and ive been keeping fish for only a year  but then that argument is probably balanced imo with the "you only live once" so im confused!

gsp's are only some-what reef same, they cannot be kept with Anemones, but polyps are usually left alone-according to mr n.monks :)

but if i do end up with a reef, will it work, becuase as jtnova said, the puffer will eat most algae eaters, and some other creatures?

thanks

No reason why it cannot work. If you add phosphate remover to your canister filter and keep nitrates nice and low by way of waterchanges and rinsing and cleaning up food etc, you should not need to worry about algae in the long term.

You will probably get a little as your tank matures but once through the other side, regular maintenance coupled with phosphate remover should keep you clear.

ok, no prob, and i know i dont really need to know this yet, but how many kg's of live rock will i need?- taking into account i will have the ttex1200 running, which should be a year matured

Go to the aquarium calculator at the top of the forum board and enter your tank size in. There is a section for amount of Live Rock on there. :good:

oh, great, sorry i should have looked first. didnt realise
thanks for your help :)

edit: 14kg it says, so working on the £5 per kg rule you said earlier tis £70 if i buy off a reefer

That sounds about reet from a breakdown. There is also good old fleabay, can sometimes get it on there too.

If you did not know the calculator was there, you cannot just go use it. Don't worry about that.

No problems
