This so embarrassing but alarming! I had a melatonin tablet in my hand and a pleco wafer. Fed my pleco and turned out lights. About two minutes later I realized I dropped both the wafer and the melatonin in my fish tank. I got it out and still intact. Think my fish will be OK? Tank holds my 2 large goldfish and a large bristlenose pleco. 75G tank.

Does it have a coating on it? Had it deteriorated much by the time you removed it? I've no idea if the active ingredient would be harmful to the goldfish but I'd like to think it wouldn't have had chance to dissolve anyway?

It was still whole. I’m watching them and they seem fine. Now I have to take a pleco wafer to sleep though. My daughter had given me the melatonin to try. Lol!

I honestly don't think it's going to cause any issues, especially since it didn't dissolve and 75g is quite a lot of water. Melatonin is a naturally produced by our bodies and help regulate our circadian rhythm. I'd assume fish run similarly.

Melatonin, even the stronger pills, isn't going to destroy you like taking some prescription pharmaceuticals. I take 5mg melatonin and I'd compare it's effects to getting groggy after dominating Thanksgiving dinner. Yay tryptophan!

Id put in some fresh carbon to play it safe and perhaps a water change too. Just because I really can't say what effects it could have. At best, maybe some sleepy fish.

I just did a 75% w/c and cleaning today. Carbon is a great idea. Thanks!

Uhhh... you have to post this while I swallowed my melatonin aren't you?!

Your fish should sleep well tonight. I wouldn't worry.

Nothing to worry about because they didn't eat it and you got it all out.

As usual, doing a big water change can help by diluting anything that might be in the water.

Initially I thought you were going to say you dropped the melatonin tablet in the tank and popped the algae wafer in your glass of water. :)
