Hi everyone, I'm posting to ask for some help. My father has recently been given a few new fish by a friend of a friend that was giving up their tank. He was able to identify most of them but there is one that he can't quite place, he has trawled through several books trying to find it and the best he can come up with is a "bleeding heart tetra" or another tetra that was a match for the shape but not the colour (the one in the book was black!)

Anyway, if anybody has any idea what these are exactly it would be a great help so he knows if they need any special care or food or if they're going to start fighting with his barbs!

They've been in the tank for a couple of months now and seem to be getting on fine with his other fish but you know how annoying it is when you just can't quite place something!

looks like Gymnocorymbus ternetzi or Black Skirt tetra, just a different colour morph.

they ARE fruit tetras but the dye has worn off.i DO have fruit tetras RIGHT NOW that i have had for about 2 years and they look EXACTLY like that.

Thanks everyone, the black widow tetra was the one my father thought was the right shape but the wrong colour. I didn't know they could have different colour morphs, I thought that would make them a different type?!

They are about 2-3 centimetres long.

Not silver dollars, he got one of those from the same source but identified it from a book. He read that you're supposed to keep them in groups but can only get small ones from the shop and the one he already has is about 4 inches long/tall so doesn't know if he should get the smaller ones. I read they were quite skittish but this one seems fine, a little shy perhaps but not too jumpy. I guess that's another question, I'm hijacking my own post!

It looks like the white skirt tetra is a perfect match, thanks for everyone's expertise.

P.S. vettech909 Do they dye fish?!
