I have bought this piece of driftwood at a lfs, it’s been sitting in a tub for about 10 days now, I can’t fit the whole wood in due to size. I’m not sure what type of wood it is and after some researching it looks like grape wood. So please identify this for me and is it aquarium safe? It’s heavy and will completely submerge

Thanks again in advance

If you dig your fingernail into it is it quite soft and easy to dent? If so, it’s likely not safe. If it is hard wood it’s generally safe

If that’s the case then it should be hardwood, I sawed a piece off and it was really hard, but I’ll run the finger test again just to see

If it drowned in the water when it was dry. There's no doubt that it is pretty dense and certainly on the Harder side.

Hi 👋🏻 I have this problem when I buy driftwood it’s normal, I have four aquariums and only very think pieces of driftwood sink in a week (almost twig width), I soaked a piece in my bath for a week it still didn’t sink( I will attach a pictures, first two before sinking next two after) I kept it at the top of the tank it looked almost like tree roots…… my fish loved it!! It slowly started to sink after roughly 8 months. It happens slowly so not dangerous. The owner of my aquarium store said he soaked wood in a bucket for 6 months before it would sink. I’m sure it will be fine but you need to check it daily. Good luck 🤞🏼

Definitely does look like grape wood. Despite its hardness, it may still break down quickly (it's reported to, anyways).

I like the looks of the floating wood

It will give the fish a new place to hide

Like in the wild

I like the look of your aquarium setup

Very nicely done

If you let the piece of wood float, it's normal that it takes more time before it sinks.

Weighing it down will soak it faster because the weight of the water on it will force it's way trough faster.

When I soak pieces that will take forever to sink I use a garbage bin to have the maximum depth of water over.

It helps get thing faster and not having to glue everything together is also a + imo.
