did u add conditioner? this is mostly the problem with most cases

hi gandalf......have you done any water tests to see if you've got an ammonia or nitrite spike? Sounds as though something could have disrupted the tank's cycle.

How big is the tank, how long has it been set up, added any meds lately, added any new fish.......any fish missing and unaccounted for?

the more info you can give the better :D

HI!ok tank is 9 gallons and has been set up for just over a year ive put no new fish in recently and done nothing different,i always add water conditioner when i change water, and up until a few days ago the tank has been crystal clear, now you can barely see thru it and the fish are all at the top gasping

What are is your waters parameters? Currently what have you done to the tank resently (any resently water changes to date). With the gasping comment it sounds like you have some toxins in the water.

is ther any way you could of got something in the tank? daft question I know but could you have tranfered anything into the water via the syphon, buckets or your hands?

I think in this possition I would test the tap water, rinse off all equipment it plenty of clean water, and do another water change. do you have carbon in your filter? also when did you last clean your filter?

hope you get it sorted, good luck :)

One thing which would help take toxins out of the water is a poly filter. They are expensive but available at most local fish stores. We had a problem where we nearly lost our mbu puffer through what we think, was the water board adding copper when cleaning the pipes. It saved his life. All the best.

I would check the water coming out of the tap or phone the water supplier to see if anything is on the go with the supply. I also think that if the water out of the tap seems to be fine then get some water changes done quickly. Make sure you post the levels for your tank and tap water. Good Luck and keep us posted :)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't really think your filter is up to the job, your tank is small but I think the Fluval 1 is recommended to be used as a supplementary filter and not on its own. It could also be to do with something in your tap water though. Has your water board done any work on your pipes lately?

Usually most people that i know find it a waste of time asking the water board anything. They are not obliged to tell you, and as long as the water is suitable for drinking standards, they don`t care about fish!!! It`s worth a try of course. Also, does your conditioner work on chloramine aswell as chlorine?
Some water companies are using this and it will not dissapate as easy as chlorine, it could knock all the bacteria in the tank out.

i would agree that filter may not be enough... is it near the top so it disturbs the surface? you need to do this to aerate the water... cloudy water could be due to a dead fish rotting somewhere... do you have a gravel cleaner? there may be lots of waste in the gravel... you need something like this to clean the gravel.

is there any carbon in the filter? if so, it may be too old to remove toxins, and possible that it is so old that it releases toxins into the water. so change it

if there is not, you may want to add some! at my lfs there are carbon inserts for the fluvals, might want to look into it

Guess we are lucky that way, they post it in the paper when they will be flushing out the system here just for the fish owners. I agree with the other posters, do a water change and get a bigger filter. :)
