Help! Fish Dropping On Me.

Just got home looked in my tank to see all my fish hiding doing nothing atall.

tested my water ph.6.8 Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 40 ppm

I am in the process of doing a 50 percent water change. And cleaning some sand.

The only changes i have done is add plant fertilizer in yesterday and a 20 percent water change this morning.

120 l tank 9 neons 2 bristlenose 6 guppies 1 ruby shark. 2 peppered corys.
Any ideas.

Not sure on deaths but the plant fert shouldn't effect them I don't think? Unless you did a big big overdose?

Only think I can suggest is water changes :\, heater isn't broke or anything is it?

Is 6.8 what your pH is normally at? I'm sure you have done it but have to ask anyway....did you add de-chlorinator? What type of fert did you use and how much did you put in? Doubt it's that though....Also, when did you get your fish and how long has your tank been running? On another note, neons are not the hardiest fish to keep either.

P.h was always 7 when i used proper p.h so i stopped using it weeks ago. i added de - chlorinator yes.


I love fish plant fertiliser i used 20 mil

ive had my fish a while few months. My bristle nose i have had a week. tank has been up a few good months.

Well, I don't know what the problem could be since your water stats seem okay. My only concern when there doesn't seem to be a cause for fish suddenly dying is the possibility that your test kit is defunct and not giving an accurate reading. This can only be confirmed by getting your water tested from a different test kit. Like I said too, it could have been a bad batch of neons, not much you can do about that if that's the case. Sorry about your losses

Well water changes done. all my fish have stoped gasping for air and started coming active a bit more.

Dont think it was a bad batch as i got 3 lots of neons from diffrent locations.

Forgot to mention i added a second filter in the tank today.

Dont think it was a bad batch as i got 3 lots of neons from diffrent locations.

Forgot to mention i added a second filter in the tank today.

Did your new filter have a carbon insert? If yes, did you rinse it with water first?

Ow i did put the filter in a bucket of water for a few mins to make sure it was running propally

Ok, I don't know if this is true or not because I am unable to find any info when googling online but, I was told that you have to rinse the carbon insert throughly because the fine particulate matter that's on it in the beginning can remove oxygen from the tank. That could explain the gasping from the surface. Like I said, I don't know if it's true or not, maybe someone else can say for sure. Take the carbon out, swish it in a bowl of tank water, then put it back. You don't actually need carbon at all unless removing tannins or medications from the tank but it's up to you if you want to keep it. I would do another water change as well (it can't harm your fish).

Ive changed 50 percent and last 10 miutes my 4 widowed tetras have died ill change another 50 mow
