Hi I am avidly searching all kind of fish forum sites for advice and information on our dear pleco that we really had no idea how big he was getting and now are in the situation that I have seen by reading, that so many get in, after their plecs outgrow their current tanks.

The info on him is this: We call him Charlie, we think we have had him about 14 years. This is his second tank and we know its too small for him : details are: 24" length 18" High and 11" wide. We think that it about 18 gallons / 70 litres? we are not too sure on that.

He has been on his own in the tank for years and we only have ever fed him the food you buy, the plec wafer food/tablets. We never knew about them liking courgettes and romaine lettuce etc, which I have now read about and feel guilty we have never fed him on that. The only reason we have looked stuff up now, is we can see he is bigger and we cant afford to buy another tank and we can only fit in a corner one, we found a Trigon 190 which LPS said would be better for him but that alone with cabinet is nearly £500! :( they said they would take him from us, but we dont know where he would end up, we sincerly would like to do right by him in his last years, as obviously havnt done so before now. Should he be bigger than heis by now? has his growth been stunted? is he in any discomfort?

Two places I found advice on, gave me conflicting advice. One said he is fine where he is and just continue feeding him the wafers nothing else. Then another said give him the vegetables and by the photo i sent, they said he looked a bit thin. Which made us feel even worse! They said the tank was far too small.

So! can anyone on here help me, advise me, offer him a super home where he can be cared for or tell me how to get a cheap tank and if the tank i mentioned would suffice?

thank you all for spending the time reading my post. I have tried to attach a photo of him, but it says it is too large but i will keep trying. Thanks again for everyones help and advice.

Hi Jane. Welcome to the forum and wanted to commend you are caring for your fish.

Wow you have had him a long time. So just a word about cheap tanks... one word... used. You can look locally, on ebay, on this site as it has a classified section or just advertise locally, there are always people wanting to get rid of fish tanks. Used is very much cheaper than new.

Good luck and thanks for just caring about that fish of yours.

what sort of plec is it ? not all plecs grow massive, so he might be a fully grown and healthy adult. ont eh other hand he could be stunted. eithey way after 14 years hes not going to get any bigger at least. can you put a picture up of the fish so we can see what it is?

Hi thanks for replies. I tried to upload a photo of him but it wldnt load. Will try again tonight. I am considering a used tank but have been put off my other forums and my lfs saying the seals may not be ok or it cld have other things wrong?? It worried me.
I just hope he isn't suffering or has been whilst in this tank I've looked at photos of other peoples plecs and then look at ours and think he looks bit thin and sad but who knows?
Ok will try again with photo later :)

if you live local to the used tank, go check ti out and fill it up.or ask the seller to fill it up. your LFS are just trying to get you to buy a new tank off them. the tank in my sig was originally a fish tank in somebodies house well over 15 years ago, then i put a snake in it, and the high temps associated with that, then it sat in the attic for about 6 years, then i got it down, put it in the garden and filled it up. no leaks, now its my fish tank.

age alone wont degrade a tank. if its watertight and looks in good nick i'd have no reason to worry.

get a tank from here or a specific fishkeeping hobby site, its more likely to have been recently or currently running. ones on ebay could have been sat in a shed for years. generally on here people sell tanks because they're upgrading or moving house, rather than clearing out clutter.

Thank you that's super advice. Ok so is there a classified or for sale section on here? I will have a proper look.. Thanks again!

sorry ive tried to upload photo of him but nothing happens.... :( any way i can email to any of you so you can put it up for me?
thanks

Gumtree is also a good place to find cheap or even free tanks sometimes.I got all mine from there and Ebay -never paid more than £70 nd that was for two 4ft tanks with stand plus lots of wood -Ebay bargain! Never had a problem with used tanks leaking -and you can always fix with special aquarium sealant if they do.Good luck with finding your plec a lovely big tank.

thanks again i will look on ebay and gumtree, hopefull will find one suitable. We have been reading all about probs people (some) have when they change to a new tank and the ph levels and such like, a whole new ball game to us - worried now that we may do something wrong when we get him new tank eventually and then dont do it properly and he dies.
:/ fish keeping is all rather stressful!!
still cant upload photo - dont know why...

I just lost my common pleco after 16 years he was 2" when i got him and 13" when he passed he was kept in a 150 gallon tank with several other plecos.
he loved watermelon more than any other food but would eat just about anything i feed him.
he will be missed.
the oldest fish in my tank now are a school of 8 glass cats that have been with me for 6 years and a clown pleco that is 5 years old
