Help/advice On Our 14 Year Old 8" Pleco And Tank Size...

Gumtree is also a good place to find cheap or even free tanks sometimes.I got all mine from there and Ebay -never paid more than £70 nd that was for two 4ft tanks with stand plus lots of wood -Ebay bargain! Never had a problem with used tanks leaking -and you can always fix with special aquarium sealant if they do.Good luck with finding your plec a lovely big tank.

thanks again i will look on ebay and gumtree, hopefull will find one suitable. We have been reading all about probs people (some) have when they change to a new tank and the ph levels and such like, a whole new ball game to us - worried now that we may do something wrong when we get him new tank eventually and then dont do it properly and he dies.

Don't worry fish are hardier thn you imagine.I've moved my fish round lots of times as I upgraded to bigger tanks. We all do. I also bring my rudd and goldfish indoors in winter and back outside in spring with no ill effects. Just make sure you rinse the new 2nd hand tank out well with lots of tap water before filling it. Assuming the new tank will be filled with the sam etapwater as usual, the Ph wll be the sme as in ther iold tank.

Thanks everyone.will try the photobucket option tomorrow when next on pc. Good to read they are hardy. We checked pH balance today at it was 7.0 so we did quite a bit of water change and used Tap safe product we have had before. Charlie seems ok and is moving about ok just sad to see him swim with one stroke and he is at the other side he so needs more room. We tried the courgette weighed down with a teaspoon tonight we will see if he has touched it tomorrow.sorry to hear about the loss of your 16 old plec (in one of my replies) he sounded however as though he had a great life with you shame you don't live in Surrey and could take in our Charlie! Anyway thanks again everyone .

Footnote news: Charlie never touched the courgette do they take a while to know what it is? As he obviously hasn't ever had it. Should we try each day with a new piece? Bottom of his tank is looking so dirty but he freaks out when we try to clean/vacum the stones and he swimS manically around and we are concerned he will do himself damage so we left it. Poor Charlie.

It needs to come out as it will start rotting, it'll release ammonia and that really wont be good for the fish. As for his reaction to tank maintenance... ignore him. The only way fish learn tank maintenance is 'safe' and not a giant fish come to eat them is by you just getting on with it. Mine (once I've had them a few months or so), tend to get the message and although they swim around my hands and gravel vac etc, they aren't skittish... they just ignore me.

There is also aquarist-classifieds.co.uk which you could have a look at for second hand tanks. Where abouts in Surrey are you based? We could help you look for one if you wanted?

I;ve always bought cheap second hand tanks they are there if you look for them as so many people give hobby up and sell their tanks on

After reading this I;d love you to get a nice new home for your plec. I bet he'd flourish in better conditions

and for your benefit if you got a bigger tank you;d be able to add more fish like a shoal of neons or something to increase the visual pleasure for you

Thanks curiosty I have emailed the one who is advertising his on aquarium classified as looks good two others think possibly too big. I agree re cleaning I think my other half shld have got him used to tank maintenance more but hopefully he will do it now. One of the ones in sale comes with lots fish and we don't want that. Right I think I have managed to upload photos onto photo bucket (not heard of that before) and i have copied the URL address and done everything it said, i just hope the 3 photos appear somewhere. Sorry if i have done anything wrong ! and i think in doing this i managed to finally upload a pic i made smaller, but other two are on the link.! phew!
