Newbie here, but i keep fish many years, esp gold fish :hyper:

BTW, i am Chinese, now live in UK. However, it is very rare to see good goldfish here, most fish i can find in
LFS is kinda rubbish with ridiculous price. To be honest, i will not even pay 1 p to buy them in China.
However, i do know many very high quality fish expert every year , where are they then? US? Pls give me some information
where can i buy some nice ones.

And a very interesting thing i found, most ppl here i know, like my friends, think goldfish are very ugly and strange. In their eyes, goldfish should be the original basic gold colour fish, nothing else. But in China, even a kid know nothing about fish will think fancy goldfish is nice looking, and will know the original one is rubbish.

So , do u think this is a culture difference thing?

Hi there!

Welcome to Tropical Fish Forums, Im not quite sure whereabouts in the UK you are, but I visit an excellent fish shop that have very high quality goldfish of many types. It's called QSS in Bradford. The owner makes many visits to japan to pick out them all. He also has a very good koi selection.

BTw are the fish in your sig yours? They are very nice fish, and good photos too!

Sorry, but I am one of those people who would much prefere to see an ordinary looking goldfish. I just think that everything should look natural, I dont like castles or plastic plant even in my tank.
Please note this is only my opinion and I know that there are many others that go for fancy fish and colours. I am not against it.

I can understand that, but u should know, even that most common gold fish u see that is not natural, the original goldfish come from river, sorry i donot know the english word for it. That kinda fish, occasionally u will have a little color on their fins, they ppl try to breed them and gradally we have a lot variety.

It is same for some tropical fish, such as guppy etc.

and dogs , cats, all come from same way.

I think most people have a problem with the fact that fancy goldies are basically, deformed, I mean compare the swimming actions of the 'normal' goldfish/carp to a fancy..

Personally I don't have a problem, and like fancy goldfish. I suggest finding a club for goldfish near you, you'll probably find what you need there

Ive never really liked the "deformed" look of fancys, then again the way most owners love and care for there fancy goldfish id say there very lucky fish most of them, even if they do have abit of trouble swimming ect

places like tropicalfish4u.co.uk sell all varieties of fancies but you cant see the indervidual fish befor you buy.

If you just keep going round fish shops you'll fine one that does loverly goldfish. i no what you mean tho. only about 1 in 5 shops sells proper quality goldfish varieties

is it just me or are fancys very proune to disesase i say this cos i gave up on them they died so easily

Yeah they are prone to constipation and swimbladder disorders, its because of the way they have been bred to have such short and compact bodies, it squishes everything up inside them into a much short gut space. In slim type goldfish like comets and commons they have much longer and more naturally shaped bodies, their gut is spread over a longer area and their swimbladder is not forced into a compact space etc.
Fancy goldfish can also be quite inbred now days, they also aren't bred in very good conditions usually and so many sold in petshops also carry desease- they are still tough fish, but not as tough and sturdy as other types of goldfish like comets and commons. On the plus side though they don't grow as large as slim type goldfish on average so they are easier to accomodate (but still need at least a 20-30gal tank).

I agree with that, when i was kid, seldom see a fish had disease. Even fancy goldfish, if you keep it in a nice enviorment, i mean like a very a big wide pond, with shallow water, with a lot sunshine, feed them live food, the fish will be much stronger, not very easy to have problem.

goldfish like green water, so outdoor pond, or at least somewhere can have some sunlight, will help.

However, u can not put goldfish in the a natural pond, we did it b4, no matter how fancy the fish is, if u put it in a natural pond, leave them alone, a few years later, you will find a lot of small fish which look exactly like normal river fish, possibly with a little color :hyper:

do not know the english name, sorry.

Basic, it is a kinda Oranda, however , it is called "12 red" , 12 red can in anykind fancy goldfish, which means there are 12 red on the specific area, that is eye, mouth, each fin... , if it 11 red or 13 red, that is rubbish. has to be 12.

e.g like panda, very expensive buttfly, actually it is "12 black" , it is same thing

I have tons of pic of nice goldfish, some are mine, some are not, when i have time,i will upload them.
